Another New Guy...
Hey guys,
just wanted to say hello for the 1st time. i just joined and am enjoying reading the posts (very funny when you roast some of the DIY'ERS). About me... i grew up in the lumberyards in my market (Kern Co, CA) and have been in the supply side of the industry for 18 years. Majored in Architecture in college, but life took over (married, 4 kids) and i had to drop out. been going back every so often to continue my education, and stay up on the codes. i have done side jobs (remodels, concrete, stucco) over the years, so i have a bit of field experience. Started estimating about 10 years ago, and do it full time for the lumber company i work for now. i also do it on the side for other contractors, and other lumber suppliers in my market. i also have building code and home inspection experience. i have dedicated my life to the industry, because the indusrty has taken care of me and my family. i am old school at heart, and appreciate and respect the "old timers" and always listen to what they have to say. if i can help in any way at all, i am here for any of you. i am sure i can learn a lot from all of you. thank you for your time. |

Welcome Jimmy!
How do you keep the stucco from cracking? and Do you ever use ice/water shield behind your stucco? |

Re: Another New Guy...Quote:
okay, the new guy gets to be tested, huh? im down with it... 1st question... you dont really, all stucco will crack eventually it just depends how much and how long before it happens, and im pretty sure that there are a lot of variables to point out when applying stucco (humidity levels, mix proportions, etc.). hire a licensed contractor with many, many years of experience, with good references. 2nd question... i havent heard of using that product here in this market, as we just use the stucco netting with the kraft paper attached on the 3 step process, and the foam on the EIFS system. and doesnt the new EIFS foam have moisture barrier capabilities? hope i passed... |

I do strongly suggest Ice/watershield to surround a chimney before stucco though. Or any wall that has a roof under it. You think the EIFS will take care of it? Whats that system called that people use where they block off the stucco like sections in 6x6 ft squares?(not sure of exact size). that seems like it would inhibit cracking. |

Re: Another New Guy...Quote:
the 6x6 squares you speak of... arent they control joints put in into the stucco? i usually see those on commercial projects, but not really on residential... unless the enviroment conditions call for it. i hope this helps. i would definitley get a stucco guy involved. maybe it would be a good topic for "general discussion"... |
