Question

Who's The Resident Expert On Chevy 2500HD?

First off, are all 2001 Chevy 2500HDs a Silverado, or is that a special edition? I found out yesterday that some 2001 Silverados had an Allison 5-speed automatic transmission that was set up for easier addition of a PTO. Is there any way to tell from the VIN what transmission a particular truck was built with? (The one I'm interested in isn't presently in a place where I could crawl under it and look.)

The way my luck runs, there's probably no VIN code for the transmission, and the truck I'm looking at doesn't have the Allison, but I might still buy the truck. A simplified PTO installation could come in handy some day, if I wanted to put a compressor on the truck.

Thanks for any info.

What engine does it have?

The Allison only came with the 8.1 gas, and Duramax engines.

Own 2 of them, a 2001 Chevy 2500HD crewcab long box with 8.1 and a 2002 GMC 2500HD crewcab short box with Duramax.

Nice trucks, Kgmz.
Well, I hope a "code 'U'" is either the Duramax or the bigger Vortec. I still might not luck out and get the Allison in it, but it'd be one step closer.

Thanks for the info. I'm off to research VIN codes some more.

I'm on my second. Had the 2001 8.1 and traded it for a 2005 diesel.

An easy indicator for the ally would be the tranny temp guage to the left of the speedometer.

Re: Who's The Resident Expert On Chevy 2500HD?

I've only seen pictures of this one so far, views of both sides and a back view. But I just did some Googling and it appears that a 'U' for the engine code means the 6.0 Vortec. Bummer, man. Then again, if that's the worst thing that happens to me for the rest of the day . . .

I'll think of something. Or I'll just come here and ask for ideas.

Thanks for the input.

Re: Who's The Resident Expert On Chevy 2500HD?

Thanks, MALCO. I found the GM one yesterday, but I was only able to read as far as the first page, which didn't have the right codes for trucks. Now I've confirmed what I suspected: wrong engine to have an Allison automatic in that truck.
Oh, well.

BTW, I also just had to replace my tranny with 74,850 miles on it, come to find out all the chevy dealers in the area were out of them...they tell me it is a common failure...

Well, as stated only the 8.1 gasser and the diesels came with the Allison tranny. You could go by the 8th digit in the vin# for what engine it has but the 8.1 and all 4 diesels have a different letter for each engine. You cant really go by the dash cluster for the tranny temp gauge because even the 1500HD with the 6.0 had a tranny temp gauge.
Here is a pic of my two 06 D-Max's.

Ack. Well, that would mess up an otherwise good day.

BTW, Dave, nice site.

I s'pose I should go see the nice folks at my bank about that '01 today before I chicken out (again).

Re: Who's The Resident Expert On Chevy 2500HD?

I had good luck with my 2002 6.0l. It was thirsty but was a glutton for punishment. I love my 06 LBZ duramax; loads of power and reasonable MPG given the weight of the truck and my right foot.

Thanks, most of it is paid for except the two trucks . I missed out on a 2006 Kodiak 4X4, Duramax/Allison, and a flat bed dump with 17k on the clock for $26k a couple months ago. That would have been a nice addition to the toys. Maybe my finances will be better next time. You know how the saying goes, you cant make money if you dont spend it.
