V Tongue Trailer Jacks & Trailer Wheels

Are all of these V tongue jacks rated at 2000 lbs? All of them i see online are rated at 2000 lbs., the 1 at wal mart is rated at 2000 lbs also.

I have 1 of these jacks on my tandem axle 3500 lbs trailer. with a rolling caster.

A few months back, my guys were rolling the trailer and the wheel snapped. cheap made in chine plastic wheel that was supposed to be rated at 1000 lbs. Im pretty sure i dont have 1000 lbs tongue weight. without my blasting pot on the trailer, i could pick the trailers front end up with both hands. pot weighs around 420 lbs.

Do you think it was just a cheap caster (it does say made in china, and it was plastic) or i actually do have 1000+ lbs of tongue weight, which i high doubt.

Where could i find a durable caster for this jack?

jack looks like this ( didnt purchase from this guy though)

i have a doolittle 16 ft enclosed and i would never put a wheel on that thing. not sure how much it weighs but its to heavy to move any way... i always figured a foot was much safer especially since the retards may unhook the trailer some day

I use a two wheel model that is sold at the boat stores. Two wheels create less friction on the asphalt (my theory). I can push and turn my trailer from the back without a hard time.

Re: V Tongue Trailer Jacks & Trailer Wheels

I had one on my 6 x 10 cargo trailer and never had a problem with it. I carried lots of weight. My friend has one on the same size trailer and the wheel crumbled.
I like the double wheel idea.

It is impossible to build a foolproof system because fools are so ingenious.

When I had my 29 foot enclosed trailer I made leg wheel by cutting off the foot and welding on a bracket that fit a solid rubber wheelbarrow wheel.

Lookup "Bulldog" jacks. They're the best that I've seen for boat trailers.

Re: V Tongue Trailer Jacks & Trailer Wheels

bull dog makes a 1200 lbs wheel, or a 1500 lbs caster if i change the jack on the trailer. i dont want to change it.

If i could get a replacement 6x2 caster, that i could swap out, that would be great.

Re: V Tongue Trailer Jacks & Trailer Wheels

Not trying to steal the thread but I came upon a nifty gadget to weigh your tongue (trailer tongue, that is).
I'm gonna pick one up as I'm adding a substantial amount of weight to my trailer and just want to be safe, rather than sorry. There are other ways also of measuring the weight with a couple of pipes and a bathroom scale. Don't know how accurate that is...

Good place to go http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/dl648/dl648pt12.ht IMHO, tongue weight should not exceed 500#'s for most trucks, 200#'s for cars. Balance is everything, just a bit tongue heavy tows best. Rule of thumb, if I can't pick it up (200-250#'s), it's not right.

Re: V Tongue Trailer Jacks & Trailer Wheels

Uh, my cargo trailer is rated at 10,000 lbs. GVWR. I'd like to meet you if you can pick up just the tongue of this trailer empty.
The maximum tongue weight for my truck with my axle is 1200 lbs. When I had the 6 x10 trailer, it was almost impossible to lift the tongue when full. With this trailer, 8.5 x 16, you are gonna crack a nut just tryin'.

My father owns a RV dealership and we have one made by Fulton that is rated at 7500 lbs. Heavy duty jacks are out there.

Re: V Tongue Trailer Jacks & Trailer Wheels

theres no way i have 1000 lbs of tongue.

without my pot on board, i can easily pick the front end up. pot is only 420 lbs.

i would say 700 lbs max tongue

Yeah...I don't get it either. My dump trailer is 10,000 GVW and even empty, I can't budge the tongue. My 6x10 enclosed trailer is tough to manuever when full too. I can't see how the tongue weight on a trailer that large could ever be "liftable" without a jack. But then again, I'm no trailer expert.
