Trailer Side Door
Anyone have any creative ideas for additional locks on a 36" side door on enclosed trailers? I'm not at all impressed with the lock from the factory - I think a flat bar would be enough to pry the door open.
I looked at some barrel bolts, but I found nothing that would work with the exterior rail for the door because I need more space to make it work. I could mount the barrel side on the wall and then the receiver slot on the door I suppose. I don't want to go to an alarm, just something to make it more than a three minute job to get in. Mark |

Re: Trailer Side Door
I got a large hasp/loop from Home Depot and mounted it on the door. I had to make a few mods to it to make it work: 1) elongate the loop slot in the hasp for more "reach" 2) bend the hasp mount to clear the door frame.
3) installed some wood backing in the wall to support the carriage bolts.

Re: Trailer Side Door
How about those cam locks that engage above and below the door with a shaft and handle in between?

Re: Trailer Side Door
Like mentioned above the Cam Lock system with latches top and bottom is the best. This way they can't pry the corners of the doors open. Have a friend who left his trailer with tools in it at a job site and this is how they got in, they actually bent the bottom corner into a triangle from the hinge side bottom to the center of the other side of door where he had a heavy duty hasp and lock. They couldn't get the lock off, but it was easy just to bend the door open.
So with a dual latch cam lock and some extra heavy hinges located low and high on the doors they can't bend the door. Also use some type of headless or security bolts so they can't loosen the hardware. Check this web page and look for the side door bar lock assembly and the universal Cam-door lock. http://www.lowcosttrailersupplies.co...rts-k03x5.html Last edited by Kgmz; 12-18-2007 at 02:00 PM. |
