Should I Have A V8?

I'm shopping for a used, late model, full-size van. I wonder if getting one with a 6 cylinder engine would be a good idea. I don't plan to do any towing, but you never know....

My current ride is a Dodge Ram truck with the 5.2 liter V8.

So what do y'all think about truck and van engines?

Re: Should I Have A V8?

I bought a used (97 with 55K) 6 cylinder extended van earlier this year to add to my "fleet". I love it. It is loaded with heavy hoses, reels, 50 gallons plus of stain, a 13 horse motor pressure washer, an HVLP spray cart and other essentials for wood resto including circ saws, recip saws, sanders, buffers, etc etc etc.

Long story short, it climbs hills and merges into traffic quickly and effortlessly. The gas savings from my other 8 cyl vans is ridiculous. I got rid of a bucket truck that was costing me $450 month in gas. This replacement is around $250 per month for the same mileage.

Yes you should have a V8, it's tasty and good for you.

My only experience with 6 cylinders in vans are the GM V-6 (a few years back, they may be better now), that got crappy gas mileage and didn't have much power and an older Ford with an in-line 6 cylinder and I loved that one.

All of our company trucks are Astro vans with V6's, the oldest one has 250,000 miles on it. Since the Astro is no longer made, and Chevy does not offer an alternative in a small cargo van, we will probably start replacing them with Chevy Colorado's with A.R.E. aluminum truck caps on them, which has a 5 cylinder motor.

The astro had the 4.3L V6, I have the same in my jimmy with 180,000 miles of trouble free use. And gas milage is great if your easy on it. I can go 49MPH and 1100 rpm and get 20sum mpg, not to bad for a 4x4. Also has alot of nuts to pull your friend out of the mud. I love this thing, I payed 1600 for it 3 years ago and so far I think the 4.3L and the whole rig is the best ever built. I dont think I would want to live without a 4.3L. Ive pulled 2 20,000lb loads of ruhbarb roots on a 4 wheel wagon and it pulled it very good. It did burn $20 in gas going maybe 8 miles. I give the GM 4.3L and the 4L60 transmission a

Look at the diesel Dodge Sprinters. If you get one be sure to get the Mercedes decals that they sell on E-Bay.
