My New Old Truck

Here is my truck, its a 94' F150 4x4 with a 4.9L straight 6, stick shift. Its got over 230,000 miles but it runs really good. Its a 1/2ton but we have had a little over 1ton on there and it ran fine. Its good off road, only thing that happened to it that was major was the slave cylinder went, oil pan gasket, water pump and the right hub got busted off by some dumb ass who hit it. And its got 150hp and 210Lbs/tq
Overall it is good, needs a new driver side seat, its a little torn. I was going to lift it but since its older I am not.
Here are the pics and the video-

And that rattling is the exhaust hanger in the back.

The pics were takin at the job were I was working with my dad.

Re: My New Old Truck

I just changed the oil, Quaker State high mileage and some Restore. New Fram oil filter and new air filter. What else should I do for it? I was going to put new rings in but I dont have the time and right tools for it.

change the fuel filter, rear diff. fluid, tranny fluid and filters, and get new wiper blades.
Does the cigarette lighter work?

Did all that and I just rewired the cig liter because the insulation rubed off and was shorting out so I replaced it and now it works. And I allso change the transfer case fluid and put new seals in it.

Its got free wheel hubs on it how cool is that. Is that rite i can't see closeup on the front wheels. Can you dial the front wheels? Meaning the hub in the center of the hub cap is there a dial in it. Meaning you can lock or unlock the hub. If it is freewheel hubs the way that works is. You have to lock both hubs before engaging the 4 wheel drive.

Re: My New Old Truck

Practialy all the Fords in that time used manual hubs.
Auto hubs are kind of nice sometimes, but I spent what seemed like an hour driving around with a firend of mine, shifting in and out of 4wd, trying to get the hubs on his truck to unlock. why don't truck manufacturers add a Manual disconnect on the auto hub or axel shaft connector?

Yep thats what they are, and I replaced the Ford ones with Warn becuase the Frod ones were made of a plastic and kept cracking so after the Ford wouldnt fix it for free(Like 4-5 times) I got the Warn ones. And there has never been a problem with it, and possibly the reason you couldnt get it out of 4x4 is you have to be stoped and the tranny in netural.
And I use them alot and they work perfect.

Re: My New Old Truck

We were stopped (although it shouldn't make a difference), and no, the tranny doesn't have to be in netural. we would stop, shift in and out of 4wd, drive a bit and realize the hubs were still locked, stop, shift in and out 4wd, drive a bit and realize the hubs were still locked, repeat. I'm not sure how long it actually took, but it was quite a while before the hubs unlocked. Kinda scares me since I have the same axel in my truck.

Re: My New Old Truck

FYI, the 300 runs fine on little to no oil pressure I bought a used F-250 for very cheap. Factory oil pressure gauge showed no pressure so I put in a mechanical oil pressure gauge. With 20-50 oil, it'd have 15 psi cold and close to 0 psi hot. I checked the gauge and it was correct, checked for blockage at the engine where the gauge reads from and it was clear. It was my daily driver for a couple years, engine still ran fine when I swapped it out for a good running 302 (already had the engine sitting around).

BTW- I noticed you're running a Fram oil filter. I really recommend you replace that with a better quality filter. The filter on the 300's sit horizontal and Frams have no-good anti-drainback valves in them. This means that every time you shut down the engine, the oil drains out of the filter back into the pan and leaves you with a dry start every time. I found this out by watching my mech oil pressure gauge and noticed that there was a long delay before reading pressure. I replaced the Fram with a Purolator and immediately noticed faster readings on start-ups.

My Dad has been usein them since he bought it, but I will get the Purolator, thanks for the tip

Re: My New Old Truck

Thats the way jeep use to work with quadtrack. To engage lowrange you had to be stopped put vehicle in neutral. Then pull the lever under the drivers seat. It also had a dial in glove box that you would turn from 10oclock to 2 clock to lock the four wheel drive in. So all four wheels would spin together. Hey that worked to because i got a jeep stuck in snow. Put it in lowrange and dialed the glove box in floored it and got out. That was years ago when i was in high school like 78. My jeep now is a completely different system not like the old jeeps.

Ps. Those freewheel hubs are the way to go. Thats why the fourwheel drive is still going strong in the ford above.
