I Hate Shopping

for a new vehical!!!

we were looking @ the ridgline for the wife but we may be past that one i don't know

so yesterday we were just wasteing time and decided to pull into a toyota dealer

so we test drive an 07 pathfinder seemed fine kinda small
they were asking 31k for it

so then i find an 07 tundra for 33k so we drive it
i have a 05 tundra no surprises NICE truck better than mine

salesman drags us inside just to SEE WHAT HE COULD DO FOR US

finally we get to the manager, his final offer was $780.00 less than the sticker plus $400.00 towards some side board things to step up on (i forget what they are called)

so does toyota even deal or you pay pretty much the sticker price?

Re: I Hate Shopping

Far as I know (and have heard), - - Toyota and Honda don't deal much simply 'cuz they don't have to . . .

I might be wrong but I think Nissan sells the Pathfinder. If you were attempting to buy a Nissan at a Toyota dealer they might try to charge you a little more.

Re: I Hate Shopping

I have a system for buying work trucks, I drive the one I own to the GMC dealership, and tell them I need a new one just like it.

For personal cars, I prefer to get something old as dirt and restore it, I prefer the look of older cars. If it is for my wife, I send her out to look and let her pick what she wants, she drives a minivan now, but now that the kids are older she wants to go back to driving a pickup truck, so she will get my next retired work truck.

I do this for my trucks too. I keep my eyes open for a truck or car I want. Usually a late model with a bad motor. Put it in the shop, on stands. When I bring it out, I have a 100,000 mile warranty, new brakes, tires, hoses, etc, and trouble free for about next 4 years. If I really like it, I re-do it every 6-10 years. No payments, no taxes either.

My personal summer car is a 76 Triumph Spitfire, I've had it for 18 years.

Re: I Hate Shopping

The way I buy is to do my homework first, not listen to the car salesman bs. Walk aroung the car lot when you are not pursued by sales people, meaning when they are closed, and take notes on the codes and prices for different equipment packages that interest you. Do not get mentally locked to a vehicle that you find attractive, you are gathering information. Then spend some time on the internet with the various sites that give you the numbers for each base vehicle, and all the possible options. You will get msrp and actual dealer costs, so you know what the markups are on the base vehicle and each package. I am now ready to deal with the salesman.
I want this model vehicle with these equipment packages, what can you do? I inform them that I am not a dealer against dealer against dealer shopper, and as long as they are working to find the vehicle I want at the price ( which by now you should have a pretty accurate idea of what you should be able to buy your desired model for), the sale is theirs. Some sales persons just cannot deal straight without the sales jive bs, if you have one of these , move on. You will find one who takes you seriously, but you also have to do your part and be loyal to him if he is really working for you. Once he sees this, and is convinced that you are not playing the customer jive bs, they will invest their time in you. Remember, they are running a business, so if you go in talking ridiculous low numbers and expect them to give you the car, you will not be taken seriously.

Re: I Hate Shopping

I spent three months researching a vehicle for my wife. She was driving a 95 Bronco and after putting a 5.8 into it prior to 100K miles figured enough was enough. Since Japan didn't make an suv large enough for my taste in 2003 (or anytime for that matter) opted on a 2000 Ford Excursion. Bought with 104K miles now with 175K miles. At first she thought it was too big but since I got sick of her always asking for the keys to the F250 figured she needed her own. Never touched the motor and tranny, bought from a one owner who took good care of it. At 165K miles all fluids were switched to synthetic and I'm really thinking about putting a 4-6in lift in it. Just put new rims and tires on it so they will look little with the lift so larger tires and rims will be needed! Once she finally forgot about her Bronco I found a guy who caughed up his 65 Mustang for it. The car is fairly clean with an auto tranny 289 four barrel. With no power steering and power brakes she rarely ever drives it.

When I finally purchased a dually this past Fall I had spent close to 6 months looking and I spent a month re-searching Dodge/Cummins. Of course Japan doesn't make a dually offering so another 7.3 Powerstroke was bought.

My first newer vehicle I bought on my 21'st birthday totally spure of the moment. After owning for a year and trading for the F250 lost $12,000 on the deal. Reminds me to never buy even almost new!
