GMC 4500/ Isuzu Trucks

Anybody ever own or currently own one? I have a chance to buy a 98 GMC 4500 with a 4 cyl./ turbo Isuzu engine. Any opinions? I'm needing another cube van soon but I need to get something that gets decent fuel mileage. Any ideas on the fuel mileage on these vehicles. I know it varies greatly but some say 10-12 mpg and others I've heard tell me 20-25 mpg. I currently get 9-10 with my 94 E-350 Ford but hoping for something better than that.

Re: GMC 4500/ Isuzu Trucks

I have an Isuzu NQR, 16 foot box, and 10 to 12 MPG would be about average, at least for the diesel, depending on your driving habits and load. Mine gets batter milage around town than on the highway. Above 55 to 60 mph the fuel MPG drops off. They are underpowered as far a I am comcerned, but still a reliable truck. When I bought the truck in 2003, diesel was $1.39 a gallon, now it hovers around $3.00 a gallon.

For mileage, a few guys I know with Sprinters are getting 20 - 22 MPG, but their payload capacity is less (if that matters to your situation) and they drive/ride a lot better than the Isuzu. I am considering one, but have heard quite a few negative comments on reliability, so I am just waiting right now. The ones I know that have them have never had any serious problems yet.

Re: GMC 4500/ Isuzu Trucks

Thanks for the reply. 10-12 mpg is about what I figured, still would like better but certainly can't afford the Sprinters price tag, even used. It's either the inconvenience of a smaller truck or just suck it up and pay for all the gas a bigger vehicle takes. Oh well, just have to raise the labor rate again.
