Ford Recalls 1.1 Million SUVs, Trucks

Ford Recalls 1.1 Million SUVs, Trucks

Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it is recalling 1.17 million trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans to fix an engine sensor that could lead to engine stalling.
By Associated Press
Thursday, December 6, 2007
The recalled vehicles are all from the 1997-2003 model years with 7.3 liter diesel engines, including the Ford E-Series van, Excursion full-size sport utility vehicle, and F-450 Super Duty and F-550 Super Duty trucks.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a posting on its Web site that the camshaft position sensor located on the engine could function intermittently and lead to an engine stall and potential crash.

The sensor is an electrical component that helps regulate the fuel going into the engine.

Ford spokesman Dan Jarvis said there have been 14 accidents associated with the problem, but no injuries reported.

In the event of an engine stall, Jarvis said drivers traveling at speeds greater than 30 miles per hour would have full power steering and power braking, allowing them to pull over to the side of the road.

At speeds below 30 mph, the motorists would still have braking and steering functions, he said.

Dealers will inspect the sensor and replace it with a new one free of charge. The recall is expected to begin around Dec. 17, with mailing of notification letters to be completed in phases by May 2008. Owners can contact Ford at (866) 436-7332.

Doh! I just replaced the CPS on my '97 a few months ago just for the peace of mind. As far as I know, it was still the original CPS that I replaced and it had 284k miles on it.

Re: Ford Recalls 1.1 Million SUVs, Trucks

I got three in the recall.

The F250 was purchased at 40K miles and at 185K miles it's first problem occured, a short in the wires near the outside of the valve cover. The diesel shop in thier trouble shooting process swapped out the CPS but wasn't bad. At 225K miles the next problem occured and the same diesel shop replaced the computer. At 250.9K miles it's had less than a grand into the electronics and motor.

The 00 Excursion was purchased at 104K miles and had a CPS failure at 114K and 124K miles. The first one was $100 the second was free under IH warranty, current mileage 182.7K miles.

The 99 F350 was bought with 120K and now has 132K miles and nothing has been touched on it since owning.

More than likely I'll bring the three in for new CPS's but they don' t need them. This was a problem Ford had with a third party vendor of the part for many years. It's about time they did something to fix the problem.

Recently a new and improved CPS has been sold at a whopping $20-25.

I'd take any three Ford 7.3's anywere. They've all towed over 15K lbs with the F250 and F350 having a lot of 20K+ lb tows under their belts.

What about GM's fuel pump issues and the Cummins lift and injector pump issues? Forget about those???

All trucks will break from time to time but it's good to see a recall.
