Ford Heavy Duty And Miles On Them

I think it's time to move up to a 3/4 ton truck now.

How many miles do you have on your Ford super duty truck, be it a 250 or 350, please list if it's gas or diesel, stick or auto.

Re: Ford Heavy Duty And Miles On Them

Nothing over the top impressive on mine. I have a 2004 F-250, not diesel, with only 25,000 actual.
My electrician, however, has a '99 F-250, Diesel, that is just about to turn over 400,000, one owner.
So far only major thing he has done is the tranny, and then some various assorted PITA things like shocks and all that.
I've always liked Fords, I know there are those who don't, but I have always had good luck with their trucks. Not a big fan of their other vehicles so much.
Although I do also have a Crown Vic Police Interceptor with 100,000 on it. Good company car. Scares hell out of the illegals too, an added benefit for humor at the HD.

What's that loaded onto the truck in photo? A friggin' silo?

Re: Ford Heavy Duty And Miles On Them

Once you buy a super duty diesel, it is to be considered a piece of major equip. I have seen these regularly go over 300,000 miles. It is better to fix it and care for it properly than to bother going for a new truck. Save the money, beat on the BODY, not the engine and tranny, and it should outlast you. These are great trucks as long as you take care of them, as long as you do not plan on snow plowing, this is better. The only thing that I have seen that sends them to an early grave is plowing. Take care of the mech, and you will be rewarded. If you have a good understanding of diesel engines before you buy it, you will be better off. Diesel is easier than gas, as long as you are somewhat inclined towards wrenching.

Re: Ford Heavy Duty And Miles On Them

Oh and if you are going "used" anything under 100K is considered "low miles". If you can get one with 225K that was owned by a diesel mech, it is just as good.(my truck, almost to 300k) Diesel's have a habit of just going, and going as long as you keep oil in them and not overheating them.

I have a 2000 F250 Superduty with a 5.4 Liter Triton Gas engine, it has 193,000 miles on it and I have not had any major problems with it.

It has a utility body on it and weighs almost 9,000 lbs.

I have towed 17,000 lbs with it before.

Many guys skimp and pay for it. It's cheaper to buy a larger truck. Sure, the truck costs more, it doesn't break as much.

I started with a 3/4 ton thirty years ago then got a 1 ton dually, then another. I wouldn't go back to a 3/4. I have a Chevy utility body gas and a Ford standard bed diesel. Nothing beats a diesel when pulling a trailer.

I have a 99 f350 single wheel diesel extended cab 8 ft box. I have a chip, 4 " exhaust, v plow, tail gate salter and a rebuilt tranny with a tugger shift kit. It has 140k on it and is pretty strong.

They don't get the mileage people say though, I think the best I've done is 14-15 mpg straight highway babying it.12-13 is more like it. 10 if your playing around light to light.

It will tow/haul anything you can think of though. Parts are EXPENSIVE! A set of injectors is going to be 2 grand when you need em and most due before 200k.

Re: Ford Heavy Duty And Miles On Them

2003 E250, bought it new back in '03 --- now with 135,000 miles or so on it.

The only major repair so far was the "service engine soon" light came on last month. Dealer said the intake gaskets had dried out, and were leaking air in the intake -- causing the computer to choke on it.

They had quoted maybe $400-500 for repairs, but the bill came to $275.

We get 14-15 mpg with the cheap gas, that's with ladder racks and 4 ladders on top, too.

Same here...03 E250. Mine has 293,000 on it. Original engine and trans. Just brakes, ball joints, tires, and plugs/coils.

Also have a 07 F150. Barely broken in with 33k on it. No issues yet. This is my personal/estimating truck. It has a magnaflow exhaust and an Edge programmer/chip. Gets 15.5MPG all day and can jussst beat my buddies 05 Ram Hemi in a drag race

'94 F250 turbo-diesel w/ 250,000. Runs like a top. The injector system cost @ $2,900 to redo, but it's just like new.
'92 F250 diesel w/ 197,000. Runs almost as good. Just bought it and I expect I'll have to put some $ into it, but man, these trucks just run and run. A new clutch costs some bucks, and don't skimp on the cheap one, stick with the original style.

Mike, I saw that truck, and the tune for Sanford & Son immediately played in my head.

I have a '02 F250SD , gas, with about 69k on it. No problems or issues as of yet.

Yeah, Lamonte the big dummy overloaded my truck, I think the chicken feeder silo was what really pushed it over the edge!

Re: Ford Heavy Duty And Miles On Them

by the way, the guys advising against the 6.0 diesel are right on the money. Its a hell of an engine when its running right, but Ford has had nothing but trouble with these engines. Turbos sticking, EGR valves gunking up, injector problems, engine electrical problems, oil leaks, snap rings in the torqueshift trannnies and the list goes on and on. Ford and Navistar/International even had a lawsuit over who was going to pay for all the warranty claims.

The 7.3, on the other hand, is pretty bullit proof. It will need a glow plug relay, a camshaft position sensor, the wire clip under the valve covers, and thats about it for chronic problems. Yeah it will eventually leak oil, but its a frickin diesel, who cares 'bout a little oil leak!

Re: Ford Heavy Duty And Miles On Them

I think the 6.0 is as good as you take care of it. I have an '06 F350 DRW and it has 95,000 miles. Mine has gone through the typical EGR, EGR cooler and a turbo. I bought mine used so I have no idea how the original owner maintained it. One of my best buddies is a Ford master diesel mechanic. I've followed his advise and haven't had a lick of trouble. Since I had the above mentioned items replaced runs great.
For the positives, I upgraded from a 1/2 ton truck and haven't looked back. It is SO much better! I don't tow but for hauling, I've had 4000lbs in the back and couldn't tell the difference. Actually, it was a better ride. SO much room in the interior. SO much hauling capability. I opted for the King Ranch version so the interior is about as plush as you can get in a truck. The family prefers me to drive when we go out. Absolutely best vehicle I have owned.
Oh, 1 more thing about the 6.0...I'm close to being out of warranty so I will be modifying it some. There are ways to make it get around some of the emission short comings. Here are some videos that go in depth about the 6.0 vs. 7.3.
Series of 6 videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH2Nm...e=channel_page
I'd stay away from '03 & '04 as those models didn't have the upgraded components from the factory.
And just to prove I'm not completely without comparison, my cousin owns an '05 Chevy 2500 diesel. His motor has less concerns but overall, the rest of the truck isn't as nice as my Ford. Even he admits to it. He's now looking for a Ford after spending time in mine.

Re: Ford Heavy Duty And Miles On Them

Had a 97 F-250 bought new and put 170,000 on it with olny a water pump(expinsive). Got rid of it in 04(dumb a*# and bought af-250 with a v-10 crew cab, no major problems other than O/D wire rubbing and grounding on the steering colm and blowing fuses for about a month unitll I figured it out. The v-10 does not like to pass a gas station without stopping though.
I miss my diesel dearly.
