Astro Won't Start When It's Damp!

Every so often, after it rains, my Astro Van won't start. Turns over, fires for a second, and then stops. It's been going on for a year. I have had a full tune up with new wires, a new fuel pump and a new camshaft sensor. It's driving me nuts. Anyone else with a similar problem. My mechnic is pretty top notch and he doesn't know what to make of it, other than there must be an electrical problem somewhere.

Had a car once that would do the same thing, turned out to be pin hole in fuel line. Short of that, fuel filter plugged?

This may sound silly... but check your battery connections and your fuse box; a bit of moisture there can cause issues- I've had the same thing once upon a time with a Jeep..

Try this:

Remove distributor cap. Spray the insides with some WD-40. Replace cap. Will it now start?

I had to do the same thing usually once a week on a car I used to have. I started with wd-40 then I found this stuff called wire dry. That was the only thng that fixed my non starting problem, I think I replaced every part on that car!

Chris, what motor is in your van?

That is the USUAL CULPRIT!!!!

WD 40 = Water Displacer, Lab (attempt, formula, clinical trial) # 40!

It IS NOT a lubricant!!!!

" WD-40 stands for Water Displacement, 40th formula. Larsen was attempting to concoct a formula to prevent corrosion, by displacing the standing water that promotes it. In the process, he arrived at a successful formula on his 40th attempt. "

"Typical uses of WD-40 in automotive repair include:

  • Driving moisture out of the high and low-tension electrical components of an internal combustion engine (e.g. cleaning and drying the inside of the ignition distributor cap) so that it will start, particularly on cold days. "
