Re: Anyone Have A Ford V10?
The V10's are like the old 460's. Got about 10mpg, no matter what what you are doing. Those things loved to pull.
Only thing to remember about the V-10 is there is 10 of everything. I know the coild packs are around 100 bucks a pop. I run a 454 in a 99 burban. I get 10 pulling anything. I have got 15-17 on the higway but, I have to keep it below 2000 RPM's to get the better milage. I have been looking at Excursion's. Not sure I trust the price of desiel to get on with a 7.3. Not too sure about the lifespan of the V10 either. |

Re: Anyone Have A Ford V10?
i have 2- 2000-v-10-5 speed & 2002-v-10-6 speed. 2000-4x4. both very good trucks. the new ones are even better. 3 v/ cyl. helps. these are highway trucks and work very well at that. not the greatest in stop & go. i prefer the gas. cleaner.

Re: Anyone Have A Ford V10?
Thanks again guys for the info!
woodchuck, thats pretty much what I was thinking about the diesels. If I am gonna go diesel its most likely gonna be a duramax, but if I go gas its gonna be the v10. Thanks, Dave |

Re: Anyone Have A Ford V10?
I dont blame yah, GM gave up on the 8.1 with the Allison. Now they are running the 6.0 instead which is a good engine but doesnt have the stump pulling grunt of the 8.1. A buddy of mine had the 8.1 in a 2500HD ECSB and could get up to 13mpg if he drove like a normal human being. For the raw power of a gas the Ford V-10 is about the only way to go, but for diesels Duramax or Cummins is the way to go. If you are looking for longevity, the best fuel milage and great torque of all the diesels then Cummins is the way to go but the rest of the truck leaves a little to be desired. I prefer the D-max for the great tranny and smooth ride, the Isuzu designed Duramax is a good engine to boot. Like i have said before, if Ford had the Cummins and the Allison tranny they would have the best truck on the market. Toyota wouldnt even be able to compete with that!!!

Re: Anyone Have A Ford V10?
Love those 8.1's, We have a 2001 Chevy Suburban 2500 with 8.1 and a 2001 Chevy 2500HD CCLB with 8.1. Also 2002 GMC 2500HD CCSB with Duramax, and 2005 Chevy Kodiak 4500 with Duramax and Scelzi Combo body. There are times I wish our motorhome had a 8.1 with Allison.

Re: Anyone Have A Ford V10?
Mines an ole dog, '00 model F350 with the 2 valve V10. I keep reading about how the V10's have to have at least 4.30 gears to tow right, mine has 3.73 and it gets the job done, but not easily, I just tow a 28' box trailer with race car, cabinets, bathroom, etc....every weekend all over the state, then during the week it serves as heavy tower for equipment and materials....it's thirsty and works, just not easily. I call the V10 a draganfly set up.....you got'r pinned to the floor draggin your load up one side of the hill, then fly down the backside going as fast as possible to build enough momentum to get up the next hill. IA is'nt know for being hilly but traveling west and south we have some pretty good grades, many while towing i can get the speedo any faster than 40-45mph while the engine sings at 4500rpm.......and dont let anybody fool ya about these engines loving rpm, i just spent $4K putting a used engine in the truck after it snapped a valve spring/dropped a valve and screwed everything up with 120,200 miles on the truck, all the trucks get serviced every 3K by the stealership too so it was'nt an abuse issue other than using it for a work truck....next truck i get diesel.

Re: Anyone Have A Ford V10?
We are keeping these rigs forever, when they wear out will rebuild them. There is nothing out there now that can compete with it, unless it is a diesel. And like I tell everyone, the only thing that would make me upgrade is if they come out with a Suburban with the same power and gets 30 to 50 mpg.
Everyone is amazed at how well the 8.1 pulls. It just chugs up the steepest hills at 2500 to 3500 rpms with a full load or pulling the trailer in the pic. IHI, you definitely need lower gears for towing, our motorhome has 4.56 gears. And whether they love to sing or not, you have to rev them to get the power. That why a 8.1 would be nice in our motorhome, it pulls hard to 3500 rpms where the torque peak is. And revving it any higher just makes more noise and doesn't pull any harder, it pulls harder if you let it go up a gear and let it pull from 2500-3000. |

Re: Anyone Have A Ford V10?
Sounds just like my 454 Vortec. All its power is between 2400 and 3400 rpm's.
The more you pile on her, the better she does. |

Re: Anyone Have A Ford V10?
We have a 2007 silverado 2500 with the 6.0 gas. A few weeks ago we were hauling top soil and concrete out for a paver walkway. On flat ground the truck pulled the estimated 10,000lb load well, but soon as there was an incline it struggled a lot. The truck that I drive regularly is getting traded in next month for 2009 duramax. Looking forward to it big time!!!!

Friend we race with has a 2500 with the 8.1 and with his enclosed loaded up he can literally smoke the tires when he leaves a stop light I just make all kinds noise and ease my way upto speed with the pedal mashed...having a hard time justifying dumping $1200 in gears for a truck with over 120K on the ticker.

Re: Anyone Have A Ford V10?
Well the original question being about the V10 but he didn't specify new, as in new to him or brand new. But the $8000 upgrade to diesel comment makes me think he's talking about brand new.
So, that said, the V10 is the best gasser truck you can get right now. No major weaknesses. The motor has been around the block and is a beast. The Torqshift trans is every bit as good as the Allison. And the truck itself is top notch. You cannot beat it with a Dodge or Gm. Especially if you are towing heavy loads up steep grades. Now, if you want to talk diesel, whole different story. Ford cannot get their heads out of their arse with a diesel. For that, Chevy has the best overall. Too bad Dodge has the best diesel but can't get a great truck to put it in. But if you want a gasser, the Ford will not disappoint. Just know, any big gas engine will get terrible mileage.

I know alot of poeple freak da phuck out over mileage with these gassers, i could give two craps less, i did'nt buy a 7700lb brick with the biggest gas engine available to drive across country on one tank, it's a truck, i bought it to do truck things, but far to many guys buy these big trucks as a soccer dad statement and then pizz and moan when they act like what they were built for, tough and grunting out work. single digits towing...goes with the territory, 10-12mpg unloaded, hey, it's a work truck, not an ecnomy car...soon as they develope a Prius that can haul over 3400lbs int he bed and tow a combined weight of near 20,000lbs, and still get over 40mpg...then i may get obsessed with mileage, until then, i want my truck to hold up to WORK. |

Good for you. Does Ford have any incentive plans going now? When I got mine in December there was a Federal incentive of being able to write total cost off in one year,plus$3500 off list and $300 off for something else. Anyways here's my rig: Your going to want the window guards, because when you go around a corner with a wet roof, the water spills right into the window switches. Also get a set of mud flaps because the tires will pick up gravel and sandblast all the lower quarters.I've seen trucks that just a few years old lose all the paint from this.

Re: Anyone Have A Ford V10?
Nice truck oldfrt
Thats the color I really wanted, but I couldn't find one. The one I picked is the dark blue. Ford has a $4500.00 rebate for the 2009's right now that ends Aug 31st, thats sorta why I moved so quick. I'm really not sure about the write off incentive though, I'll have to look into that. Yup I'm deffinetly gonna get the mudflaps and probly the window gaurds too, heck maybe even a bug sheild, I think they look good on these trucks. Dave |
