Another Truck!!

Well, my 06 Duramax ended up at the dealership last Thursday due to a blown head gasket. It is a dealership i used to work at and the Tech working on it is a friend so i am getting new gaskets, 2 new heads, a new steering box, a new tie rod end and wheel alignment. Problem is i have heavily relied on this truck for my business and i could not get a 4X4 truck for a rental nor anything i could tow with. So i have been stuck with a junk Ford E-250 that gets stuck on flat ground . My wife and i went and picked up a second 06 Duramax 4X4 today as a back up vehicle. Now back to work i go.

Re: Another Truck!!

I could have used a 4x4 last week in IN.
My Super Duty with positive traction just is not the same as a 4x4.
But at the time I could not find a 4x4 with a utility bed. In the south that is. (NC)

Looks sharp woodchuck! I have always liked that dark red color, you don't see to many of those with the two tone paint

Thanks, i didnt like the color much when i first got it but it is growing on me now. I pulled the headlight covers and the bug shield will come off in the next couple days. I think i will be keeping the side steps though.

Re: Another Truck!!

, they look good on the truck but you cant see a damn thing driving at night. You might better drive with the lights off IMO. The bug shield is a pain when you are trying to unlatch the hood and it vibrates when the plow is on.

Re: Another Truck!!

Congrats on the new truck!

You must be brave to buy another truck like the one you have with blown head gaskets and bad heads??? What caused the failure and how many miles? Guessing the warranty paid for it?

Personaly I would have ran very very far away from that happening again.

In 610K total miles never taken a head off any of the three 7.3's.

Heard of a lot of 05 D-max's with overheating problems but not many 06's.

I am very pleased with my 1st Duramax "in the shop". If the tech at the last dealer had listened to me he would have looked for the leaky head. I smelled it for quite awhile and some techs on other diesel sites told me that it may be a head gasket and that is what i told the tech. If he had looked then and repaired it then i wouldnt have ruined the head. This truck that i just bought smells of coolant once in awhile so i suspect this will need gaskets too. I will be putting GMPP Major Guard on this one like i did on the last truck.

Re: Another Truck!!

It would not be the first time GM was told of a problem and nothing was done! A contractor friend of mine has gone rounds with the GM dealership for noise out of the transfer case. On the last trip the service writer said if he paid $170 for some injector treatment or something they would fix his problem. Do you think they fixed it? NOPE! And he's not happy about it either. Each time he brings it in it's another $100 out of pocket.

Edmunds did a long term test on a 07 GM 1500 crew cab. A couple times it was brought to GM for tranny problems which both times they said it was nothing. One weekend the editor in cheif decided to take the rig on a little road trip and guess what happened? Yup, the tranny failed! The funny thing is when they brought it in for swapping out the tranny they were then told of a common problem. This was the four speed tranny btw.

Of course you have the Allisons so you won't have to worry about tranny problems. The 06's having head gasket problems aren't that common are they? Perhaps your previous one and the new one are very early 06's that had the same overheating problems as the 05's did? Most of the guys I know running the D-max's have had very little troubles with them. The same can't be said of the guys I know running the Ford 6.0 Powerstroke!!!

If you think there is a problem with the "new" truck I would make the dealership fix it. If you are still able to put an extended warranty on it it should still be in the initial warranty period.

Re: Another Truck!!

Yeah, these trucks are noted for tansfer case issues not that GM will admit it. The problem is known as pumprub, the oil pump in the transfer case rubs a hole through the case and lets all the fluid leak out and of course you burn the transfer case up. There is a fix out there for it but GM doesnt honor it. The truck i just bought also has the 100k engine warranty so it will be covered down the road, and i will be using it.
