Xrp Torque Setting-in All Speeds?

I recently acquired a Dewalt DC988 Cordless Hammer Drill through an ebay purchase along with some other dewalt cordless tools and batteries. The torque drive system seems goofy-is it supposed to work in all three speeds (it's an XRP tool). currently, the torque drive only works in speed 2 and 3 but I'm not sure if its a design decision on Dewalt's part.

thanks,

In 3rd speed, the torque setting wont drive a screw unless I set it to drill, or to the highest number. In 2nd speed, its a little better I think, but I still need to put it to the drill setting with long screws. In 1st gear it seams to work the way its supposed to and will drive a screw without having to set it to the drill setting. Its a bad design. It happens with all of them. But its still a good dependable drill.

thanks Chris-that's what I was wondering, if it was by design. I have another cheapo 18v dewalt from one of the big box stores-not XRP-the torque drive on it works properly.

The setting get weaker from 1 to 3 but I can drive a screw with 3 and basicly use 2 95% of the time drilling or driving, 1 was for nuts and bolt. I did get a deal on xrp impact driver at lowes a few days ago, full kit: charger, driver, 2 xrp batteries $114 brand new clearance. I bought 2 just for the new batteries but those drivers are great used them for bolting 5/16 carrage bolts in 2 layers of 2x YP and they would pull the bolt heads into the wood if I didn't stop I think you got a worn out clutch on the drill.

That's standard behavior on the DeWalt 3 speed drills. I think the reason is that they put the clutch before the gearbox which means that depending on what gear you're in, the clutch cuts in a different torque. For me, I don't care because I rarely use the clutch anyway. I've found on most cordless drills that the clutch is rarely consistent enough to rely on for screw depth. You've got to learn to do this manually.

Same here. I rarely used the clutch for setting screws. It is, however, very handy when you are using a hole saw and you dont want to twist your arm off.

Also, 72Chevy, before you ask, the answer is yes; switching speeds sometimes involves a series of reverse-forwards, wiggle-wiggles.
