Whistleing Ladder

What is going on? I put a fiberglass extension ladder on the roof of my xterra and it had an unbearable whistle at around 55mph. On the return trip I flipped it around although it didn't help at all. Is this common with ladders on top of vehicles?

Re: Whistleing Ladder

Yes and I've heard of some people spray some foam insulation in the holes, just enough to dam the holes. Problem solved!

Re: Whistleing Ladder

insulation foam will make the ladder to heavy try duct tape or switching you ladder from front to back and over. Mine used to do the same thing till I found the right way to lay it.

How much heavier could the foam really make it? I like the foam idea

You kidding me? We're talking a partial can of foam insulation. What weight? Pull your skirt down.

But I struggle with my 32 already I wouldn't want any extra weight at all. But I guess your right a partial can isn't like adding lead. Murph

Don't fill the two top rungs or you'll never get your outriggers in...

Re: Whistleing Ladder

I remember this one truck I had when I worked for a company years back. No matter how I laid the ladder, it would whistle and howel. I logged hundreds of miles every day. It was enough to make you stir crazy. I solved the problem by paying for a big fat stereo installation out of my own pocket. (by the way, I was on the clock while the stereo was being installed, so it almost evened out!)

Is that the 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton Xterra?

Re: Whistleing Ladder

i never have any problems with my ladders whistling. and i have 3 or 4 of them on top of the racks at any given time.
the ones that do whistle a little are the scaffolding picks. still not enough to bother me much.
the spray foam would just be a mess and that stuff gets brittle after a while exposed to sunlight.
maybe someone should invent some small plastic plugs that snap into the rung holes.

what brand ladders do you have that's whistling. i have all heavy duty werners and they are well made and don't whistle at all. not sure why but they don't
