What To Do With Drill Bits

I always have a few drill bits that dont seem to have a home. I would like to keep everything together but I dont like those cases you get with the useless bits in them. When have I ever needed a 13/64 bit? On the other hand I seem to go through .125 bits like water. Any suggestions?

This may not sound real organizational but it worked for a large machine shop, Tupperware.

If you use a lot of bits, consider a drawer storage unit. Mark the size on the outside of the drawer.

Trade....get everyone that uses only certain sizes to post their unused sizes and then trade off. I give my extra's and old ones to customers. Old men who save every scrape think that I am santa claus.

Not trying to steal your thread but this plays into your dillema, onthe other end of the spectrum i have a whole bunch of 3/8"-5/8" long steel bits and augers, i hate to throw em out, and I go through alot of em, but particularly for the twist bits does that drill doctor work worth a damn or would I be better off wiping with a benjimin and flushing it down the toilet? and anyone got a good system for resharpening augers, it'd be nice to have a bunch on hand. I always seem to be running out for one of these damn bits

Bone, I do have a drill doctor that I keep in the van and use it all the time as most of my bits are in the toolbox and wear against each other. When I get one out that isn't sharp enough I can resharpen it in about a minute. Don't know what to say about augers though.

Re: What To Do With Drill Bits

I keep my long bits and augers in a long plastic toolbox case with an oily towel. The towel helps reduce them wearing against each other, and the oil helps keep the rust down.

I wish there was some sort of way to keep them properly separated.. Maybe route out a plank of wood to rest them in.

I use a few of these for impromtu cases for stuff like you are talking about firehawk, you can buy them for about $5.00 and they work great for holding a bunch of bits or drivers.

Re: What To Do With Drill Bits

I'm with Finley those plastic cases are great (I use some Tupperware to), I save all the dissacant bags that come in pakaging and put them in to prevent rust/moisture.

I sharpen twist bits by hand, except real small ones (I throw those out), and for augers I use a file and do itwhile watching TV.

To protect bits I put rubber caps or a piece of hose over them.
