Re: What Is The Best Generator For The Money?

I recently bought the DuroMax XP10000E 10,000 Watt 16 HP OHV 4-Cycle Gas Powered Portable Generator.

It's not cheap, but a great buy.

I love tool reviews that praise how wonderful and durable tool xyz is, but they don't understand why it costs that much money and think they're being ripped off. People like those other people should just buy craftsman/tool shop/black and decker/etc. type stuff because that's all the quality they want to pay for.

I have a generac GP. Not used it yet, but I've hear nothing bad about them.

I have a coleman/kohler 10k model for whole jobsites. I would like to get the 3k honda cycloconverter for running a saw.

It's 68lbs, $1300, Durable, GFCI and pretty quiet.

I'd love an eb6500 too

I currently have a 6800KW Rigid, with the Yamaha engine. It's a huge beast on wheels, but no problems, so far. I don't use them on Jobs very often. It's backup power for my rural house. It is close to half the price of a comparable generator with a Honda engine.

I had a Generac 5000 KW, for about 15 years. Briggs and Stratton engine. A customer bought it for his project and when we were done, he sold it to me for $ 250. That was a great deal. It was much harder to start then the Rigid and it went through a few carb rebuilds. My fault, leaving untreated fuel in the tank.

Re: What Is The Best Generator For The Money?

The OP asked about the best generator for the money, not the best generator for any price.

Really, we need to know what he is using it for. How much wattage he needs, and how often he is going to use it.

I agree about the good qualities of Honda engines, but they are like the festool of generators.

Re: What Is The Best Generator For The Money?

I have a portable welder generator; miller roughneck. I got it for scrap value, fixed it and like it..... but...... it is SO damned heavy. I almost need a generator that I can lift into a truck. This is close to 400 pounds.

If you buy economy generators they will not be durable, will not have the duty cycle for continuous work, such as in a power outage where you are running it long periods and at or near the rated wattage.

Maybe a sparky can comment, but people also need to be aware of voltage drop issues with undersized extension cords or an under revving motor will bog down your output and could potentially be hard on your tools.

I have a tool called a kill-a-watt that plugs in and measures output; voltage and hertz. If your generator is not running right you could damage expensive equipment.

True that.. I was blowing lights out with my generator. When I checked the voltage it was pumping out like 145 volts.. Luckly there is an adjustment.

I was tempted to buy the Ebay ones for $400, glad I didn't, there is no shortage of people that wished they ended up buying the Honda.
Yeah exactly.

You made a smart move there because you ended up saving yourself in the end.
