Total Station Revisited

I recently had my first up close experience with a Total Station laying out an irregualar house foundatiion. It was amazing how quick and accurate that the pins went in. I realize that some time was spent by the operator at his home with my plans, but it was quick , quick on the spot.

I didn't use the instrument but watched at a close distance. How easy are these to learn? The gentleman that I used was not the most generous with giving me much knowledge on the subject, but I guess I can't blame him.

In searching I find some units priced in the 2,000 range but most are more like 5-6k. I don't know but it seems that the 2k investment would be worth it knowing the accuracy is nearly perfect.

I have read several earlier postings on this subject, but it seems that most are at least one year old, and I figured with technology more people probably have moved this direction.

Any information on the subject is appreciated.

Re: Total Station Revisited

I have looked into it mostly to set anchor bolts for colums on larger buildings. A setup will run you about 5,000 for something entry level. I bought a Topcon digital transit with a laser pointer for about 2,000 + which is a big help, but it is only good for setting line and turning angles you still have to tape of distance or cross two points to set your marks.
