Steel Blade In Miter Saw

I have a 12" Dewalt compound miter saw. My question is, can I put a 12" steel cut off blade in place of the wood finish blade? . I believe the arbor is 1" on both

Thanks

Jeff

Seems like I tried that once, I think the blade thickness kept it from working, it's been a while.

Read the manual. Asking someone if you can do something the manufacturer is responsible for determining is like asking your girlfriend not to get pregnant after the fact.

Re: Steel Blade In Miter Saw

You can do it but you need to get a blade that matches the speed of your saw. If the blade spins too fast it will just blow to pieces when you start it. If you are thinking of using a composite blade.

The problem with using a miter saw as a cut-off saw are all the plastic parts. You'll melt the guard and whatever else the sparks will come in contact with.

I use a 10" Ryobi for cutting threaded rod almost daily and it has been fine for months, maybe if you were cutting softer metals that throw more sparks it would be more of a problem.

The bigger diameter the blade the faster the edge speed will be. Check the manufactured speed of the saw you will be using and then check the maximum speed of the abrasive blade you will be using. I used a Makita chop saw to cut 2 x 1 1/4 .125 wall stock to make my ladder rack years ago that I MIG welded. I have cut up to 2 x 4 .25 wall steel on it in the past. I had taken the plastic guard off it long ago.

Use a 5'' disc grinder with a 1/16 blade ,works like a charm and wear safety glasses . Miter saws are not cut off saws, they spin way too fast, danger Will Robinson.

Yep - I walked on my jobsite one day to find my saw on fire and the guys dumping a bucket of water on it....

Cutting threaded rod isn't too bad- they're quick cuts. The problem appears when you're cutting solid stock and tubing. I use a 4.5" and 7" hand grinder for the smaller stuff, horizontal bandsaw for the larger stuff and plasma cutter for sheet and plate.

Whatever you're using, always wear a face shield! When a blade shatters, it's nasty. I use a Uvex Bionic shield- pretty comfy and hugs your face/neck pretty well for protection from the sparks.

Re: Steel Blade In Miter Saw

You can pick up a cheap chopsaw for $50, and the abrasive blades are designed to work at the saws RPM.
