Stationary joiner

Does anyone have experience with the ridged stationary joiner. Its a good price, and has a decent size table. I looked at the Delta bench top but it seems way to small. I know Ridged is a 50/50 shot anymore. Any ideas on another brand that I could get within the next week and would be under $500.00?

you should be able to get a large unit like a Grizzly for the $400 range. I use to have a delta 'benchtop', was not impressed for the work I needed (oak for one). I would recommend the abiltiy to rabbit and you really should get a 3 knife cutting head.

Bought and used the ridged. I have no complaints. Im used to using a PowerMatic from the shop I had been using, and so far this is just as good, obviously 20 bf doesnt test a tool but with the lifetime service agreememnt I think it will be fine.

unless you get a jointer with a big ass bed, the more important thing is some infeed-outfeed rollers or tables. If you want to make doors or something long, it will be difficult to joint an oak 2x6x7' without some infeed/outfeed support.

I'm not that impressed with ridigid tools. I live near Los Angeles and I couldn't even find any place that had replacement parts for a bench top planer that a GC I worked for owned. I called the places listed on their site and nothing. I ended up having to order the parts directly from them. The place where I have all my tools repaired wouldn't even touch it and they repair every brand you can think of.

There was a review in Wood magazine March 2006 for 8" joiners and Powermatic was rated #1. The 8" is about $1200. I don't think I would get anything smaller then a 6". Those little portable things are lame.
Delta, Shop Fox, Jet, Yorkcraft, and Grizzy are all good.
A Grizzly 8" with a straight cutter is only about $650. Good price for an 8".

If I had the time I waould have waited for the grizzly. I got the ridged, 6 and an 1/8 with a 42 inch bed, much bogger than the delta that they sell at the box stores. It did a great job on the cherry yesterday and we will just have to see what happens down the road.
