Snowblower Slip Clutch?

Does anyone make a snowblower with a slip clutch rather than shear pins? And why not?

My driveway, and the road it comes out on, are stone-surfaced. I've hand-shoveled it for the last 24 years, but I'm getting tired.

I had an old orange one that was used a cintrifical clutched worked amazing. It was a tank all metal no plastic. Sadly some one else needed it more than me.

Did you ask your wife to see how the shovel fit her hand?

Ouch. I've been very fortunate; never lost a piece of gear so far.

In a sideways sort of fashion, that's what happened here. Some years back, I had the money to pave that sucker, but wifey insisted that we had other priorities. And then we really did wind up with other priorities, year after year.

So it's still not paved, and not likely to be for a while yet. If it was, an "ordinary" blower would be a no-brainer. I honestly haven't spent any real time doing research, but it's my impression that practically none of them use a slip clutch.

Why the heck not?

Re: Snowblower Slip Clutch?

Use a normal snow blower and lower the rub shoes so there is about 3/4" of space between the scraping blade and the ground. You will leave a layer of snow but you won't throw many stones.

pfftt...you flatlanders...you don't use a snowblower till the snow is packed an inch or two. If you are snowblowing rocks you have to wait till winter comes.

You would have to by a rock blower to use in the summer.

Re: Snowblower Slip Clutch?

You are right, I just use a shovel for the side walks. Both
our vehicles are 4 wheel drive, piss on plowing or snow blowers.

BTDT. MOF, I helped a neighbor modify his so that it ran about 3-4" high, but it still snarfed up the occasional stone. And there goes the shear pin.

Might not be such a big deal if I hadn't switched from a 4WD truck to a 2WD van at the same time as getting lazy and using propane to heat this winter instead of the wood/coal stove--meaning no ashes for traction/solar melting material.

Still, it makes no sense to me that they all seem to use shear pins.
