Sliding Miter Saw?

I'm sure these have been discussed before but I have a question pertaining to my use? I am looking for a sliding saw for purely cutoff work, 90 degree and no beveling so I don't care about things like angle stops and laser alignment and such. The only requirement I have is the ability to cut true and smooth through up to 12" stock that can run up to 1-1/2" thick, from poplar to oak and maple, etc. Can anyone steer me right? Thanks, Rod.

Get a Radial arm saw. Way better than a SCMS for just straight consistant cross cuts.

Re: Sliding Miter Saw?

I could be wrong but I don't think a 10" can cut 12" stock. I believe my old DeWalt 12" could cut just over 13"

Re: Sliding Miter Saw?

A small saw isn't going to consistantly cut square, fast or very long given the parameters. A 12" Delta Contractor grade RAS will do it fast and all day long.

Want one? $150, cast iron and copper wound motor, 110/220V, could use a new deck. I'll even throw in a couple of blades. You pay shipping.

PM if interested.

Re: Sliding Miter Saw?

Thanks for the replies guys. The vast majority of the work this saw would need do is within 6" width and less, maybe 5% of use would need the slide capability, but it is better than flipping and flopping. I'd just like a 12" saw that runs true across the width of a 12" board with no shimmy. A RAS would do the job, but would be more than enough on most occasions. Rod.

Re: Sliding Miter Saw?

You can get radial arm saws that are about the same size as a sliding miter saw. If all your cuts are square cuts, it really is the tool for the job. Are you looking for a stationary saw, or one that you can take with you to jobs?

Re: Sliding Miter Saw?

IMHO, More is always better. Buying a minimal machine and pushing it to it's limits just means another ride to the store to buy another one at some time. Buy oversize and it will last a lifetime. Also not wander as much.

Re: Sliding Miter Saw?

I do agree, more is better plus 10%. The other issue is shop space is at a premium right now, and until I can spread out a little.......the slider may have to do for now.

Re: Sliding Miter Saw?

If it's for a shop, get a nice big used radial arm saw and make the room for it. It will be cheaper than a sliding miter saw since it's used and considered somewhat old fashioned, and it will be good quality because tools back then were built solid to last. Not to mention, it will be big, so should you one day need that capability, you will have it. The only thing that would be bad about it is if you have to take it to the job, because it won't be light.
