Saw Guard Helper

I saw one of these in a local hardware store today- anyone ever use one? it looks like it could be useful. I'm thinking of picking one up to try, but I'd like to find out if someone else has tried it before I drop $40 on it.

I don't have a problem with the stock setup, but that's because I'm left handed and so are wormdrives.

I'd always considered worm drives to be right handed because when you hold the saw in your right hand, you can easily look at the blade as it cuts.

Anyways, it's easy enough to pin the guard back, but if this thing works, I don't need to go searching for a scrap of wood (16 works on the mag-77, but the bosch needs a shim because of the plastic handle). Just tap the button if the guard hangs up, and keep going. It's also a lot safer because it isn't held back the whole time.

However, I'd like to know if it works first.

Re: Saw Guard Helper

I don't like it (not that that matters) but be careful,if something does happen you would be on the hook with OSHA and maybe your ins. co.

Being that it is not orig. equip. it is at your risk.

I would think that you would be more on the hook if something happened when the blade was pinned back. According to the company, it's Osha approved.

I kinda like the idea if it works right. Not that I need it, I'm sure we all are pretty good at giving the saw the ol' reach around...

Re: Saw Guard Helper

It looks like it would work for the right hand, which is what I usually use, but on the odd cuts where that kind of thing is most handy, I use either hand about as much. It looks like they need a flapper on the right side of the handle as well.

Osha does not approve anything.
They only write standards to follow, anyone who uses that line in their product info should be called on it.
I have asked for back up to this claim many times and never been given any!

Re: Saw Guard Helper

I used to tap a thumb screw with a spring to hold the guard. Not too noticable and easy to drop for lunch and breaks etc...

I also heard that same thing that this new tool is Osha apporved. I never heard that Osha does not apporve tools. How can I find out more about that? This is interesting.

Call them, I have talked to many compliance officers and any modification of any tool outside of factory parts is a violation.

Even those rafter hooks we like to put on our saws and guns could lead to a violation, unless you can get a letter from the manufactuer.

Right off the 3rd hand's web site :

Is the Original 3rd Hand™ OSHA approved?
OSHA does not approve tools, due to liability. The Original 3rd Hand™ meets OSHA
standards and has been reviewed by Cal-OSHA.
