Router Table

The wood worker show is next weekend and I'm in the market for another router table. I have used the CMT table and liked it but have heard good things about the Bench dog table. Anyone have or used the Bench dog table. The bench dog is about $80 cheaper for the same components as the CMT table.

Re: Router Table

This doesn't answer your question, but why not save about $380.00 and build one yourself? You can still buy the router plate insert and fence and just build the base. There are all kinds of free plans on the net and you can go from soup to nuts with options and elegance.
Just a thought...

Re: Router Table

Well yes it is true, I could do the research, find the plans, parts and then build my own but when you calculate all this time that I already don't have it is cheaper to buy one. Like any good tool it will make me more money then it cost me. I have an equipment budget that starts with this show for my shop (garage) tools. But thanks for being concerned with my money.

Re: Router Table

What do you intend to use it for? I like my Bosch table for general work in the field. If you are going to spin big bits, nothing beats a shaper.

Re: Router Table

That's what I got, - - a portable Bosch table, - - folds up nice with the router still in it, - - good-to-go. In the shop I have another router table (built into my cab saw extension table), and two shapers, a 1 1/2 HP and a 3 HP.

Re: Router Table

I sold my shaper about a year ago and made a router table with a PC 7518, an Incra fence and router lift from Woodpeckers. (great company).
Just ordered another 7518 and will be making a mirror image of the table so I don't have to futz with set-up for raised panel doors, cope and stick, etc.
Magnum, if the Bench Dog is $80 cheaper, go with it. Bench Dog is coming out with some pretty nice stuff. I have their featherboards and have looked pretty closely at their other items.
Have fun!

Nah, he's okay.

Yeah, they do a great job for hold-downs in the t-track of the fences. Now, the 6" wide cypress ones (shop-made) do a wonderful job holding stock against the fences.
Hell, I even use a pocket hole jig (Kreg) now and then.

Re: Router Table

I've tried some of the plastics that come with new machines. I find them too stiff and they just don't seem to 'slide' right.

My lead cabinet makers tend to be older (50's and 60's) and they find interesting things to do with the plastic ones. A pair mounted vertically on the wall holds tablesaw blades. Cut down to 2 fingers and mounted on a board can hold prints with a piece of cardboard behind it, they can work in a similar fashion mounted on a post.

Re: Router Table

I have been looking into getting the bosch table along with the bosch 2 1/4 HP router that has the fixed base and plunge base combo. Anyone else have this router? And complaints? It will be a few weeks at least till I get it. Wont need it for a little bit. Thought about building a table but the time spent will not quite break even with buying the table plus i need it to be portable and a wood one would weigh too much.

Re: Router Table

I have 2 of them for free hand work. I love 'em!
I bought the "D" handle for one and prefer it over the side knobs, but if you are going to mount it in a table, that shouldn't matter. They are well built and easy to adjust. A little wax on the motor housing will make adjustment a bit easier.

Re: Router Table

That is one of the things I like most about the bosch was the way you adjust the depth it was so smooth and nice in the store... I have a crapsman that you rotate the whole thing and now it dont adjust so well. The D handle I think would work better than the side handles but the combo dont come that way maybe an upgrade I will get. I do intend to use it in the table quit a bit but not all the time. Glad to hear some good words about this router.

Re: Router Table

The Bosch looks okay but the table is a little small. I have a Makita M12 router that needs a table. I'm not to concerned about mobility, I can add wheels to the cabinet and roll it in my trailer. It's more for shop use, making raised panel doors and misc. trim

Re: Router Table

Robert,
Try taking the motor out of the sleeve on your Craftsman and clean and wax both parts. I'll bet it will adjust a lot better.
