Ridgid Tools

What are your thoughts on the brand. I seem to have a growing supply of Ridgid tools and so far they are very dependable. Right now I use their compressor, circular saw and drills.

Any input?

Re: Ridgid Tools

I got the 24 volt li-ion cordless set after Christmas last year, at their year-end clearance sale. So far so good, the 1/2" drill is a torque-monster, and I use the circ and sawzall quite often with no problems. I did have to turn in one of the batteries last week for replacement, it wouldn't hold a charge. I got the 10" jobsite table saw with stand at the HD BF sale, but I haven't busted it out of the box yet.

Re: Ridgid Tools

I have conservatively 10k in Ridgid plumbers tools and accessories but the only non-plumbing type tool is a shop-vac .I haven't heard anything bad about the power tools but as long as I'm not having problems with my other brands I will usually stick with them.

I have a lot of ridgid tools. Lots of ridgid tools. I like most of them. I really like the cordless tools. Even the 18V drills have some serious torque that will suprise you.

Re: Ridgid Tools

All my plumbing tools are ridgid and nothing else. The power tools have grown on me I guess, I am deffinetly looking at a new ridgid shop vac and that little 6 1/2" corded saw is pretty nice I am not sure how much longer I can resist. I would probly consider them more if I could buy them somewhere other than the home depot, its bad enough I have to buy some stuff from them cause they ran the lumber yards out of town!

I tell you what, I'd be a lot more gung-ho about Ridgid tools if they weren't the house brand at Home Despot.

I only have one Ridgid tool in my arsenal. It's the new air cleaner they have for $99. Works awesome on interior remodels just outside the work area to catch the stray dust. HOs love it.

Re: Ridgid Tools

I don't have much experience with rigid tools, but I haven't seen any quality issues. We had a rigid shop vac on a site I was on a couple years ago, that amazed everyone on how powerful it was.
the thing that worries me about rigid is their customer service- I was looking at some of their cordless tools that were listed on the rigid site, but that HD, the only place that sells rigid power tools, didn't carry. So where are you suppose to buy them? Not to mention that according to the hd rep, Rigid's customer service sucks. So when the rep for the store doesn't want to sell the house brand, that can't be a good thing.

Re: Ridgid Tools

I have had a few warranty repairs done for me. While the closest service center is a about an hours drive I usually take them when I have other things to do in that area. 1 time I dropped them off and they shipped them back to me all fixed and no charge for any of it.

I think the distance to an authorized repair facility is the key. I own a couple Ridgids (jig saw, drill and hand planer) and the reason was more the great deal at HD than service, but I do have two ARF's within an hour.

From what I hear, the lifetime warranty is great if you live close, but if you do not, Ridgid does not pay to ship.

I also like the tools I have, but I am lucky, the only brand of tool I have ever had a problem with is Bosch, and even then it was only one angle grinder, probably just a lemon.

I don't know about the whole Home Depot connection. We were buying Ridgid pipe threading machines, hand-held threading dies, and pipe vices 40 years ago. Long before Home Depot was a twinkle in some corporation's eye. We always got them at plumbing supply houses along with Ridgid pipe wrenches, etc.

I think the only Ridgid electric tool I have is a compound mitre saw....

Ridgid is owned by a conglomerate that also owns Emerson Electric, which among many other things, produces electric motors for Ryobi tool, and some other brands, it was not a huge step for Home Despair and Ridgid to strike a deal to produce power tools that would be exclusive to Home Despair, as the technology was already there.

So Ridgid plumbing tools and their electrics lines are likely apples to oranges...

The warranty is still the warranty, the quality of the power tools as compared to their pipe tools is night and day. Most of my plumbing tools are made by Reed, I prefer their tubing cutters and their threading equipment.

Re: Ridgid Tools

Exactly. Ridgid was making plumbing tools for ages when it was still Ridge Tool Company. Now their new owner wants to cash in on the name with a line of power tools sold through Home Despot.

A buddy of mine related his experience with a Milwaukee drill he bought from HD. It was a Hole Hawg. Took it out of the box on the jobsite, chucked a 2-1/2" Roto-Bore in it and started to bore a hole through some 2x framing. As soon as the cutters hit the wood the gears in the drill stripped out. Brought it back to HD and was cheerfully give another drill. Back to the job and exactly the same thing happened with the replacement drill. Now he gets a refund and buys the same drill from an on-line tool supply. No problems since.

I wouldn't even buy Hilti from HD!
