Removing a stuck bit from Dewalt impact driver?

I have a dewalt impact driver that one of my guys got a screwdriver bit stuck in. You can pull out on the collar, but the bit will not release. i have tried wd40 etc to lubricate it. I did not know if there is a way to take the collar assembly apart to get the bit out. The owners manual is not any help.

I have had the same problem. What has worked for me was either tapping the bit and pulling it out with some pliers. Or grab the bit with some pliers and impact it in the oposite direction you were useing when it got stuck, the impacts should loosen it up.

is it a hex shank?

the hex shank is bent. I had that happen twice when i dropped or stepped on my rigid impact driver. the shank bends and the collet will not clear the stepped detent of the hex driver/bit. only solution is an extreme tug of war with a vice. tapping while pulling helps with the aluminum shanks. don't know if it will help with a steel shank.

if the bit has any kind of bulge to it that you can hook with a hammer claw, then you can pull it just like pulling a nail. I've done that a few times. Just hold back the collar and yank it out of there.

Aand once you get it out , throw that bit away. It is the bit ,not the tool.

I tie a chain around the drill and hook it to my truck.

tie a chain around the hex head and tie it to the bobcat.

Get into the truck and floor it pop right out

Try vice-grips on the bit and hit the grips with a hammer.

What OCRS said but be sure to pull the lock collar too.... Might help to have someone holding the driver and pulling the collar while you hold the visegrips and wail away.....

Dip the tip in motor oil overnight pull it out with a vise grip in the am. If it is still stuck heat it up a bit

Damn Greg!!

I have 2 Makita's, a Bosch and a compact Bosch Impactor.

I have not touched one of those in about 8 months.

If Festool make one, I am pretty sure (83.87%) that I wouldn't.

I just dont like all the noise anymore.

I must be getting old.

I honestly don't think that would happen.

The shanks are completely different than the 1/4" hex.

If it does I will report it.

Also- I had numerous bits get stuck in my Bosch, it always twisted them.

Just beat the crap out of it, it will come out.

My 12 and 14 volt Mak's never did that.

Use a sleeve or shim if the release collar comes out to far.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I will try your ideas tomorrow. I have already tried the tug of war ideas with the vise grips. I was worried if i pulled to hard I would mess up the shaft or something internally and ruining the tool with to much force?
