Reconditioned Or New?

When you need a tool, do you buy brand new or do you consider reconditioned tools?

I must receive a couple of tool catalogs a week and a lot of their tools are "factory reconditioned".I see a lot on eBay also!

Do you think the savings is worth it?

Re: Reconditioned Or New?

I buy a fair about just plain "used" and not even reconditioned. Example... I just picked up another Ridgid 141 hog head threader on eBay for 120 bucks. They're about 1900 bucks at the supply house. For that savings, I can afford to buy a couple of parts if it needs it. It turned out, the tool was in perfect (albeit dirty) operating condition.

New if it's your bread and butter. Used or reconditioned if it is going to sit in your truck/shop most of the time. New if it is 2 cycle.

Re: Reconditioned Or New?

Provided the items are what I want and the price is right, I'll always buy used if I can first inspect it and it's from an original owner or reputable dealer that I know. I don't buy used goods sight unseen. I don't buy stuff for 'parting out' because I'm not set up to tear down/stock/store items and I don't like having junk around for the purpose of 'someday' making use of it.

Usually new on any power tools, sprayers, pressure washers, etc. Used on stuff like ladders at the pawn shop....

Re: Reconditioned Or New?

I just bought reconditioned bosch tools and porter cable compressor, and they were new in condition; no scratches on anything, and everything runs like new.

Reconditioned tools are as good as new; Used tools need to be more aware of. I bought a pc tiger saw model 9747 for 50 shipped off ebay. POWERFUL machine cuts through wood like butter

Re: Reconditioned Or New?

I recommend reconditioned tools as well. They come with a 1yr parts and labor covered free when you buy them. So if something does go wrong, your covered by the manufacturer even if you buy from a third party. Recon always if it is available- otherwise stick with new.
