Just do the math....

15 A x 120 V = 1800
1800 / 745.7 Watts (in one HP) = 2.41HP

If this formula is correct, then wouldn't every 15 amp, 120 volt saw produce the same horsepower? I had a Craftsman 15/120 table saw that Sears claims is 3 hp. The Bosch specs list the 4100 as 4 hp.

They are universal motors. It is probably rated as 2 1/2 brake HP. This is a HP rating that is to show the absolute maximum instantaneous HP. This is a false HP rating if you plan on using this saw for more than an instant. If it is the same saw that I have, I would guess it is about 1 1/4 HP

thanks fellas,i seen a deal on a craftsman 3 HP that had the two side extensions, and the outfeed extension, and was considering it for a shop saw, dont have the funds for a high end (baby steps) right now

the portable job saw i have has plenty of umph (technical term),runs a dato no problem, and rips 2x material no problem,so i figure anything over the saw that i have now which is rated 2 1/2 is gravy given they are rated in the same manner, not a real big fan of craftsman power tools but not really anti either

trimman, I have had a craftsman shop table saw for about 17 years. I only use it once in a while but it works fine for occasional use. I paid 400 bucks for it new way back when. I paid more than that for my dewalt compact saw.

thanks for the input Warren, much appreciated, still waiting for the guy to call me back,i did a little research on it,it looks like it retailed for about what i paid for the dewalt

looks to be well made with a nice stand, and dust bag as well, would definatly be an improvement for making built in cabinets,i could cut the pieces at home and assemble on th job rather than rastling the sheet goods with the smaller Dewalt job saw

Not even, its like amplifier wattage its all bull...somewhere in the literature there is written "designe and specifications subject to change without notice" that means there could be a rubber-band wound around in there and they could call it 3 HP.

Years ago I thought I would snap if anyone ever asked me how many watts something was....now I just tell them what the manuel says and don't waste my breath with the speech.

i knew about stereo wattage claims were bogus,i mean really a 200 wt boom box? 4 channels at 25 per and their claiming its 200 watts, however i did not know that equipment motors were rated in the same manner,i guess as long as it has enoungh guts to rip 2x with no bogging im happy

my Dewalt portable has no issues ripping 2x at all,and runs a Dado fine as well, its one major down side is width capacity,i love the fine adjustment knob, and the fence locks solid and true, the stand folds up and is simple, and takes no room in the van like the cumbersome wheeled units do,i used a buddys Rigid table saw a few months back, nice saw, plenty of guts and has a few more bells and whistles the Dewalt lacks,im just really not into the folding dolly setups for saws

If you have the model 745 Dewalt specifically says don't use a dado. I don't know if the same is true for the 744.
