Old Beam Saw? (56k Warning)

I've found this old beam saw at a second hand shop-

it's a Mall Saw model 120. It appears to be worm drive, and spins a 12" blade.

I'd be interested in refurbishing it, but I can't get any information on it. I'm particularly interested in how to find blades for it, because the arbor looks like this:

the square is roughly 3/4" on a side.
Also, has anyone ever seen a saw that plugs into a light socket before?

Anyways, I'd be interested if anyone has any information on this saw.

This is the first thing I found...

I knew I had seen the name before, and it must
be 'cause the sold through Monkey Ward.

The screw socket deal is maybe a user
modification, I remember seeing
cord-ends like that in hardware stores.

Keep Googleing with the company name,
md has posted from some patent search
data bases in the past.

I just keep wondering how well it would work with that short of a cord, and the other end plugged into a lamp or ceiling!
I've searched around for Mall Saw, but I can't get any information on the model 120. I can find information on the mall chainsaws and the model 71 corded saw, which is a smaller, less powerful sidewinder.

Oh, almost forgot. That connector that screws into an Edison based socket; that's called a "Benjamin Plug". It was the standard tool connector used by the railroads once upon a time. It may well have come on the tool that way if the railroad originally purchased this saw for their use.

EDIT: Here's that plug, from a 1936 Westinghouse catalog. The bottom one looks like the one on your saw:

Re: Old Beam Saw? (56k Warning)

they must have made a few different size saws, if you note on your 1st and 3rd photo, the mallsaw id plate on the gaurd is made for a different diameter saw, it does not follow the radius of the gaurd.

Not long ago I scrapped out an old
extension cord with a female socket end,
so maybe that's what the guy was doing
there too.
I imagine you could change it to a blade end.
It probably came that way.

Keep searching, it'll keep you off the
streets and outta th' pool halls!

the store thats selling it doesn't know anything about it either- the tag on it lists it as a "big a$$ saw".

Been missing your posts while I was pecking keys.
Thanks for that "Benjamin" thing, I knew that once.
I used that old cord as a work light til the
rubber disintegrated.

I'm thinking of buying it, took pictures so I could find more out about it. I might just buy it, I have a feeling that it is worth to collectors than they are asking.

Re: Old Beam Saw? (56k Warning)

I would almost bet that MDshunk has a few of those around his area. Amish carpenters building post and beam construction use saws like that although that one is a bit on the small size compared to the last one I saw being used. I think that one had an 18 inch blade.

and I didn;t see anybody address the hole inthe blade;unless that saw has a really odd arbor, you use an insert of the correct size for the arbor. That way one blade and a few inserts can fit any size arbors.

Re: Old Beam Saw? (56k Warning)

you have to have a modern blade stamped to fit the arbor.. i that is what I do.
