New Grip For An Old Hammer

Anyone know of an economical way to regrip a hammer? Mine is an old craftsman 22oz framer. I've had it for 20 some years and would be lost without it. Unfortunatly the grip is smooth and hard to keep ahold of it anymore. I tried new hammers and just don't like them as much as my old one. I thought about tape like hockey stick grip tape but don't want to do a trial and error experiment.

I take it this is a wood handle. How about carving some design into the wood? Like a checkerboard design. A dremel or rotozip would do it.

Look up plasti dip online i know you can buy it from like summit racing it is used to regrip tools with the rubbery type grip. Work great comes in a can. Dip handle in , pull out, hang to dry Repeat if you want a thicker coat. Comes in many colors. I used it on all my ratchet and stuff for workin on cars and love the stuff its pretty cheap to only like 6 bucks a bottle can probably also get at local auto parts or tool store

It is a steel handle with a rubber grip.

mustang hat sounds like a good idea maybe I'll try that.

Re: New Grip For An Old Hammer

You might try that hockey tape idea- I wrapped both my framing hammer and finish hammer with tape the same way I wrap my hockey sticks, twisting the tape into a kind of rope, wrapping it around the handle, spacing the wraps out about every inch, then covering it over with more tape, to make little ridges. It works great, and gives real good grip. One of the other guys I work with just wrapped his handle, without the little ridges, and it seemed that the grip kept wearing away, and he was replacing it every couple of weeks when it no longer had the same grip.

Re: New Grip For An Old Hammer

My dad had an old Craftsman hammer (all steel) that he used for 40 year and I've got a 30 year old Buck Bros (all steel) that I'm pretty fond of. Anyhow I've tried that plastic dip and it came flying off when I was hammering, I was left hold the grip as the hammer flew. Maybe I didn't put on properly or clean the hammer well enough. I ended up using bicycle handle bar wrap, probably similar to the hockey stick tape, it works great and provides a good grip and is not sticky (I think hockey stick tape might be, can't remember, it's been years since I played hockey).

Re: New Grip For An Old Hammer

for the most part, there are two types of tape that get used on hockey sticks- athletic tape (white, non sticky surface), and friction tape (black, sticky surface). Some people just use one or the other, I use athletic tape for the handle and friction tape on the blade. I wouldn't recommend friction tape for any kind of handle, it takes forever before it stops leaving sticky residue on your hands.

Try this...it's made specifically for hammer handles. I put one on a hatchet handle and like it a lot.

I've used the grip stuff that you wrap around the handles of squash raquets. Works well and costs little.

There also self vulcanizing tapes like Tommy Tape. Sparkies know about this stuff.
