I thought it was for spacing for engineered floor trusses and such.

Hard Data!

" Note the markings on the tape. Each mark indicates a 1/16-inch increment. There is usually an arrow indicator at 16-inch increments to show the typical distance between wall studs. The diamonds are for marking joists and studs at points one-fifth of 8 feet. "

yup i joist layout, be it TJI or OJT's, havent done a 19 3/16 o.c in some time. most of the places ive been working on are additions with 9 1/4" TJI's so they call for 12" oc or 16

The diamonds were there
before there were TJI's.
We did some roof truss on
that layout, and I'm told
it was common in Texas?
Maybe other non-snowload
places as well.

Are you sure ? I remember it the other way around. My first experience with TJI's was in Denver 1981. I think Denver was a test market for them.

We did the 5 to a sheet layout
Late 70's, early 80's?
Never heard of TJI's til much later.
I'll look around for an old tape
tomorrow, but I wouldn't think
they'd start to change tapes to
accommodate a new product til
it was in pretty wide use.

I was wrong once before.

I'm not sure which was first, - - but either way it's basically a compromise between 16 and 24 inch centers, - - 5 studs, joists, or rafters per 8' section, as opposed to 6 or 4.

I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that they've included the diamonds pretty much since the company was founded in the 1800's, when you were just a young'un.

Can't seem to nail down a reference right now, though.

Should have invested in dirt,
when they invented it.
Just thought it was a fad though.

The answer is LAYOUT, intermediate between 16"OC and 24"OC. And it has nothing to do with engineered lumber. I have my grandfathers stick rule, dating from the 1950's, and it has 19.2"OC ticks
