Re: Murder: What's The Best Grinder?

How about a cyclonic dust extractor with a dust muzzle. They Dump most of the waste into a bag rather than into the filter. Something like below.

That would probably be the bee's knees if we did this sort of job on an ongoing basis. But this is pretty completely outside of our normal realm, most likely a once and done, never to be repeated. We'd have yet another toy to store with little chance of getting much use out of it. And as I said, dust control really isn't an issue for this particular job.

Still, nice to know what's available. that's definitely going into the archives; thanks.

Just go buy 30 of the ridgid ones, keep burning them up till you are done.

When you are done take them all back and say that most were all faulty. Keep your receipt!!

Re: Murder: What's The Best Grinder?

Some friends of mine own a stamping factory that makes the steel griddles that are sold at Cabelas. They go through quite a few grinders a year, and have for quite a few years. They have come to the conclusion that Dewalt offers the best lifespan to price ratio. They located a store a couple hours from them that they find to have the best prices on dewalt, and whenever they find themselves traveling past it, they stop in and pick up a couple grinders.

Of course, their experience is with grinding steel. Masanary might effect the machines differently.

Thanks, but yes it does. You might call concrete dust "floating grinding compound"; a whole different thing from steel/iron filings.

Don't suppose you could scarf up a few complimentary griddles for your esteemed colleagues on CT, could you?

I spent a couple days in a tent with the dewalt cutting out real stone out of a fireplace, it sounds a little funny now but it still works.

That there's a LOT of $30 grinders!

Nearest service center is an hour away, and I'd have to buy at least 3-4 of them to make that a viable solution, given that one or two would be down/being serviced at any given time. Still, I wouldn't rule it out if we did this sort of job on a regular basis...

I can think of a lot of things I'd like to spend a couple of days in a tent with, but a DeWalt ain't one of 'em.

You should try one of these

in the interest of science, of course.
They have an interesting way to
get to work if nothing else!

Now THAT I could go for!

I actually did run across something very similar when doing my homework for this job, and it would be the cat's pajamas for replacing bricks here & there, or cutting a custom opening for whatever you might need to stick into a wall. But for mass production mortar removal, I think the circular blade still wins.

We're just a few days from finishing grinding the first end wall of that building and starting the mortaring. Been meaning to get some pics up, but... you know how that goes.

One disappointment: Picked up a Contractor 2-pack of Bosch grinders on sale at HD for $80. First one out of the box had a !kuck! !kuck! every so often running under no load. Figured it was brushes and would wear in. It seemed to, after ~1.5 days. After three days, it turned out to be a gear problem--lock/go, lock/go, and spun the nut right off the spindle! Brushes aren't even half gone. Dadratted Chinese cheapstuff.

So far, Bosch and Ryobi are the only brands we've bought brand new for the job. Two Ryobis lasted seven and nine days respectively, with that first Bosch going only three. The second one is two days in with no symptoms so far. I'll file a report after we murder a few more.

Re: Murder: What's The Best Grinder?

Thought about using a concrete chain saw? They are in the $1500 range, but have no issues with dust because of water. Plus they are designed for these types of applications. A grinder is not really designed to take a lot of dust on, even though guys use tuck pointers and grinders all the time.

Really? They make one with a 1/4" kerf? I've honestly never heard of one for tuckpointing. Don't know how well that would fly on this job--in many cases people will put up with dust, but mud trails running down the street can be a totally different matter.

No.

Interesting; thanks. I could see maybe using one of those for the occasional VERY small job, but there's no way they could compete with a 4" wheel.

One thing I didn't mention about that job is that many of the joints had been repointed before. And much of that mortar was considerably harder than the bricks.

It was a chore to stay in the mortar and out of the bricks with a wheel--imagine trying to keep one of those things going in a straight line under conditions like that.

Forgot to follow up on this. After that early failure and replacement of the first two-pack Bosch, we finished the grinding with both Bosches still alive, though soon to need brushes. I'd say they were just a tad tougher than the Ryobis, as well as being slightly more comfortable to use.

Overall, for a throwaway grinder, I'd grab a Ryobi. For a keeper, I'm getting new brushes for my Makita.
