Re: Means Of Organization

Ken,

I use the systainer system like this..

Tile kit
Sys3 all my tile hand tools then i have an
sys2 that houses my grinders
3 different sys1's 1/8" , 3/16" and 1/4" spacers.

my drywall kit
sys2 broad knives, pan, mixer, trowles,
sys2 with 45 min mud.

plumbing kit
sys1 with tools a sort with copper fixtures
sys3 with p traps and drain fittings

elect kit
sys1 tools
sys2 holds white switches, outlets and plates
sys2 for lt almond
sort for cable and cat 5

laminate kit
sys4 with rollers, filler, files.....

trim kit
sys4 18 and 23 ga guns, nails, 2 P 10, titebond...

Silicone kit
sys4 clear and white silicone and gun paper towels

the kits contain EVERYTHING you need for a given task tools and SUPPLIES
this means i have more than one of many tools but they stay with the kit.
Redundant tools with systematic organization means i get more paying work completed with out spending overhead time sorting out what I need for today.

"On a jobsite, I figure out all the tools I'm going to need, put them in a carrying tool bag, or tool tote, whatever you call it, and everything else in my tool pouch and get to work."

If our time is worth $50 hr how many redundant tools are you paying for every year using the system you have now?

I save an average of 1.5 hours a week using this system. (remember to count cleanup and put away, and reorganize time) If you are worth less the benefit of the added productivity may not be worth the change. worth more than it is truely money in the bank

Having everything in a kit for a task allows you to keep an inventory list with it and make sure you have everything back in when you are finished

How many tools are misplaced resulting in wasted time finding them or replacing if they are truly lost.

How many extra trips (to the truck or store) for forgotten supplies

This system is Different. it costs $$$to implement. It needs to be demonstratively better than what you use now to be worth the time money and effort to adopt it. I am asking you to think about these things to determine if it is right for you.

I think you need a van to make those work right. But either way, for my purposes, I picture doing things faster using bags instead of those boxes. With bags I can fit everything in vertically and keep it all organized pretty dang good. I use a similar routine by separating the tools with the tasks, I have a bag for electrical, a tool tote for general stuff, one bag for doing patchwork or paint, and I use a bucket for drywall stuff. That covers everything I need.

Re: Means Of Organization

Van sure does help, I work out of a 16 foot cube and a honda element.

I use to do the bag thing too, but bags do not stack well and are difficult to take more then 3 at a time. Rectangular boxes that stack perfectly and latch together are very space efficient. Having the ability to have all your small accessories organized in drawers below is an added bonus.

I don't want to know how much time I spent diggint through bags looking for stuff and never finding it until the next time I looked for something else inside the same bag.

Time savers for sure.

Craig- I think I gain 1 more productive hour of work each day, using systainers/sortainers and festool.
Saves on multiple trips, looking for things, and clean up!!

I like to get home to my kids.

I prefer to invest my extra hour at the bar...then chew a pack of gum on the way back and blame it on work.

...As you can see no kids yet...

Plus having stuff laid out so nicely lowers blood pressure and stress...I may be dreaming but I think for the price your dick grows a bit more too.

You like them a little too much then. Yeah your vehicle makes a difference, I'd have a hard time throwing those stacked boxes behind the drivers seat in my truck. Bags fit back there pretty nice though, and I won't buy a van, they can be broken into too easily, and they're not four wheel drive, which I need around here.
