Love My Pin Nailer

I have always used my brad nailers for interior trim and cabinet work but never thought I needed a pin nailer. Honestly I thought they were one in the same. However this project had so much fir trim that loves to split, I bought a Bostich 23gage pin nailer.
How did I ever live without it. When putting returns on window aprons, I often glued and taped them or tapped a finish nail into the plaster to wedge it in place till it dried but with the pin nailer I have no fear of splitting. I even nail into the small bead at the bottom of the apron and after many tries, not one split.

Love my pin nailer-img_1927.jpg

It may be hard to tell in this picture but that bottom bead is only .25" and would surely split with my brad nailer.

If any of you are wondering if you really need one, spend the lousy hundred bucks and you will never be sorry.

Bought the cheapo PC at HD and it works great on stuff like that. Wonder what life was like before.

Some guys here may chime in on the Grex.

They come in handy for sure. I just used mine yesterday on some returns on 1/2" thick prefinished oak chair rail I installed in a Starbucks. A brad nailer would have blown out for sure.

Re: Love My Pin Nailer

crovello I was in the same boat as you! I never had one, I thought do I really need another finish gun. I just picked one the other day, like you said I don't know how I ever lived without it. I picked it up for some very very small prefinished cabinet moulding. It wouldn't split if I tried!

I picked up the grex 635 it seems like a nice gun. I did have some problems on some real hard wood with it not wanting to set the pins all the way. I still have to call grex, but I'm sure once I get it fixed up it will be great

Try some 2P-10 on those returns. With the accelerator
you hardly even need a pin. I have been using the Grex
p650 for the last 2 years without one problem.
I have run 10k+ pins through mine, 5/8 to 2"s.

Re: Love My Pin Nailer

The Max nailer seems to made by Grex, just a hunch though.
the beauty of the Max is that it doesn't dry fire.
We nail off finished toe skins with these and it is easy to dry fire an unknown amount of nails with the grex before you notice there are no nails in the flippin gun.

Both guns are very good, and I agree. What did we do before we had these things?

Max, Grex and Cadex are all just about identical.

The p650L grex has a lock out feature on it.

Does anyone know if the Cadex will dry fire or not?

Warner, did Gus just call you a tool?

Re: Love My Pin Nailer

I have a cheap one that came with a small compressor. Man it is the bomb! It may be cheap but it does the job. Great little tool. No more taping or holding small detail trim waiting for the glue to dry. Since I am a one man show, I use mine to temporarily hold up crown so I can position it for final nails. If you have to take down the crown to retrim, no holes to fill.

That is the only one I see they offer with a lock out.

I don't have the lock out on mine and I have never ran it dry and kept going.
They all have little sight windows on the magazine's.

It was Mr. Tool, so I take that as a compliment.

I guess it was, there was smoke was in my eyes.

I have used the Cadex gun quite a bit, I like it too.
I think the brad head pins really don't hold that much better.

Re: Love My Pin Nailer

I had intentions of buying one, but just didn't need one desperately, so I couldn't part with the cash. Same with a 15 gauge.

Happened to be in Home Repo one day and saw a 4 gun Senco kit with a rolling bag for 150 clams. 15 gauge, 18 gauge, 1/4" crown stapler and the 23 gauge pinner. The 15 is awesome when needed. The other guns don't shoot long length fasteners, but for 150, I circled like a buzzard a few times then decided I have to have them.

Re: Love My Pin Nailer

When I first picked up the pin nailer I noticed it had a safety on it. I said to myself, why the hell does this little gun need a safety when none of my other guns have one . Then I pulled the trigger and a nail shot out. Now I get it, no tip safety.

I can get that tip in places my brad nailer would never go. I just have to remember to keep my finger off that trigger.

Re: Love My Pin Nailer

Dave,
We've been using the same Bostich (Amazon $79) for about 2 years, with no problems. Initially, I had to fine tune the nose to get the set right. Once done, it's a perfect set every time, no matter what it's used on. We've only use about 5,000 or so shots. Just as a reminder to everyone, the nails are directional. If they're in backwards. there is a good chance it'll jam.

I kinda found the safety a bit odd myself, but like anything else, it doesn't take long to get used to it.

I have the Grex pin nailer. Amazing how easily it fires into oak. I wish someone made a cordless/gas pin nailer. I am more and more trying to ditch hauling an air compressor around.

I was thinking of trying one of these things. Know anything about them?

JacPac portable co2 tank and regulator.

I hear you can do better if you just buy a portable regulator and co2 tanks for paint ball.
