Which Laser?

Looking for a tripod laser for elevation only. I can't think of an instance where I'd need to shoot a straight line on the ground where I could not use a good ol' string...

Does everyone use David White? Last time I used a laser it was a 20 year old Laser Beacon so my current knowledge is nil.

Do I NEED a variable speed?
I want a visible beam.

What are you guys using?
Patrick

Re: Which Laser?

I've been very happy with my David White laser. The only thing I've found better for straight elevation are ones that a company I worked for in CO had.. all aluminum bodies. The company that we got them from was Hixon Mfg in Fort Collins, CO.

From my experience for "interior" work, PLS Levels have been the best.

Re: Which Laser?

I got the David White Mark4PL 5 beam and love it

It is great for plumbing up tall rakes for framing and doing all kinds of interior stuff. I even used it outside to do a deck when I forgot my transit.

Re: Which Laser?

What are you going to use it for?

Outside, Inside?

If outside what kind of range do you need?

The good old string doesn't work so well in the wind or long distances. I just used one of our lasers awhile back to shoot a line 800 ft plus for a fence line over uneven terrain.

Something I posted over at the Heavy Equipment Forums:

We have our old Spectra Precision L600 and a CST-Berger LM800 dual slope.

I bought the CST when our Spectra had to go in the shop and then had to wait awhile for parts. The shop loaned me a Leica Rugby 100LR to use while I decided if I wanted to but another laser or wait for mine.

The Leica was nice but really didn't do anything our Spectra couldn't do. So I researched on the internet and didn't want to spend a fortune. I ended up getting the CST and this laser is great and I can use it for all kinds of things, since I do a lot of different things from excavation to building houses to interior trim and cabinet work on the houses we build. This is a dual slope laser and has a verticle plumb beam. I bought the package kit which comes with the laser, detector, tripod, rod, remote control, interior V-mount so you can hang it on the wall, targets, glasses, and case. Specs are almost the same as our Spectra or the Leica. 1/16" at 100', 2,000 ft range same as our Spectra, short 500' from the Leica. And I like the fact that I can mount it on its side on the tripod to do vertical or as I used it to shoot a straight line for 800' of fence.

I bought the CST at Engineers Supply for $1,012 in July. They are now selling the LM800pkg for $977.

I have also checked the CST against the Leica and our Spectra. They were all dead on to each other at 1,000 ft.

Forgot to add link to laser at Engineers Supply.
