Buy used tools are good:

1. Save $$, and minimize tool insurance$ & BIG loss$ if stolen again;

2. Afford mutiple "spares" on the job in case of break-down; and

2. Theft-deterrent (because thieves like to steal brand-new, "shining" tools more than the beat-up looking ones). They can sell back new tools for more$$ than old ones too.

&#$k buying used hand held power tools.

I want to know where, what, why and how about them.

I will buy a used truck or trailer but not most tools.

My rule of thumb is dont buy something used that you cant tell if it was abused. And only buy it used if its a REALLY good deal.
Cheers Jim

Smaller tools, I buy all the time, new or used, doesn't matter. Larger tools and equipment, I will not buy unless it will pay for itself in the first year.

I've never been one to buy used either. Here and there, I guess, for the really pricey stuff that I rarely use, like my big Hilti SDS I bought used. But stuff I will be using often to make a living with I feel better buying new, I'd hate for a used tool to die on me, then have to buy it again, probably new, and end up spending more in the end.

my dad taught me about buy "used" or "reconditioned stuff". It never worked right, or was just more hassle.. money hole than a new fresh "whatever" would have been to begin with.

So from that... I would rather buy a new $400.00 nail gun than a used any day. I know exactly where it has been, and what abuse it has seen. If I had a full time framing crew.. might be a different story. IMO it is just safer to buy new.
