It Just Doesn't End

seems that every new job I get, I need a new tool! Monday goin to go to Hilti and get a TE2 - and later in the week if another bid comes in (ie: I get a deposit) I gotta get a new compressor.

My small compressor is great for finishing, which is what I try to do, but when customers want a gazebo or a small deck ?? my comp is just too small to run the spiker gun. Buddy of mine has a ridgid aluminium tank thing, he loves it, but I'm a little suspicious as it appears to be cheap.

lookin hard at the Makita mac2400, but it's heavy as an anvil! the next model has wheels but its huge mac5200.

fortunately, I really like buying new tools!!!

sunday 6:30am.... coffee!!!!! wife wants flower containers today! another reason for a new compressor! LOL

Re: It Just Doesn't End

I look forward to buying new toys, er, I mean new tools. I sit back and have to come up w/ things I might need at this point. I scan craigslist daily to see if there is something not in my collection at a great price. Right now I'm searching for a good used Bostich flooring nailer. Already got the stapler.

Yeah isn't it awesome?!

I need a bigger compressor too since I got a framer, little Emglow is nice for the pinner but a little slow for the spikes.

The aluminum Ridgid air compressor your friend has is actually a Maxus made by Campbell Hausfeld.

and then i got a mac 1000 for the big chores!!

I would rather have two of everything than one newer one with a useless warranty.

It's not like theyre gonna rush to the jobsite with a replacement so you can keep working. You have to run to their store, and either wait for them to fix it or ship it off or buy a second tool so you can get back to work. At that point the warranty is worthless to me. (and most of the times what breaks is in the fine print as a non warrantyable part so you end up paying for the repairs anyway ie nailer drivers)

Depends on the tools for me. If it's a good price, and it's something I can work on, I'll buy used.

My rule for used is usually good shape for 1/2 price or descent shape for 1/3-1/4. I enjoy the hunt for the bargain almost as much as using the tool afterward. I've never been bitten yet.

Over a grand for the cost of a new tool like a siding break, concrete saw or other stuff. I could see buying used but for a nail gun that it $300-$400 doesn't seam worth it. Maybe my area is different every tool I have come across that is for sale is because it was beat to death. I have bought a couple stages used, but you really can't do a whole lot to those.

Come on - this is why most of us got into the trades, we love buying the toys, I mean tools. That we can then actually make money with them, & actually build something worthwhile - priceless...

I haven't tried the Ridgid compressor yet, but I have yet to have a problem with Ridgid at all. Aluminum - no rust another bonus. Does your HD have a rental area - try before you buy

Re: It Just Doesn't End

My general rule of thumb is to buy 1 new tool with every job. I've been in business going on 5 years now and thats the only fun part about doing remodeling anymore.

As for used tools, if they are quality tools that work and I can get them for a good price I buy them like I buy coffee....constantly.

I just picked this stuff up at a self storage auction.

TS-800 wetsaw for $35 (needed new pump) $65
Craftsman router with 20 bits for $65
8' Werner fiberglass ladder $10
24' Werner Aluminum ladder $40
Bostich flooring stapler $25
Complete 200 pc Craftsman handtool set $120.00 (everyone was bidding on it.)
40 boxes Hardi-screws at $1 a box,
Roto zip with 22 bits $45.

I'll do that all day long.

Re: It Just Doesn't End

I have been buying new tools when I see they can make an upcoming job easier or safer. A couple of months ago I had a tile job that was using hardi for cbu and bought a dewalt shear made to cut hardi, I could cut the hardi inside with no dust. Anytime I see that a new tools can make the job easier or faster I will buy it as long as I can justify the price and feel I can make money with it on future jobs.

I have mostly bought new tools because I don't trust how others take care of their tools. Lately though I have been finding alot of good deals on craigslist with homeowners that are trying to get rid of tools they used once or twice and now need money. I've found some almost brand new tools for 1/3 of the price.
