Most of the carpenters around here prefer Estwing.

Re: A Great Hammer Needed!!

Estwing, Plumb, both good hammers. My brother loves the hell out of his Craftsman. I use a nail gun so a hammer is a hammer to me however, if I have to swing I'd use my Estwing or Plumb.

Smelling some spam are ya Pipe?

Re: A Great Hammer Needed!!

thanks for that bob,

i'll take a look at the craftsmen. i have heard of the estwings but always been hesitant to spend so much on the hammer. Plumbs have been mentioned by others quite a bit also.

why do you opt for the nail gun more so, is it for speed and the amount you use it? because i could also think about this.

How much did all those less expensive hammers you had to keep replacing cost you? I'm sure if you add them up it's a lot more than one Estwing.

My Estwing has been in my tool bag for 20 years.

While I don't use them daily, I've had Estwing framing and finish hammers since 1981. I expect they'll be around another 25 years.
I picked up my son's Stanley 'tuning fork' hammer a couple of months ago and used it for a day or two on a small home project. I only drove about 10# of nails with it but I did have the sense that it was easier on the arm than most hammers.

stanley fat max 22oz framer with the metal overstrike protector. Lasts a lot longer than most wood handles. Personally I can not stand a metal handle hammer. I like wood

I can't believe no one mentioned Stilettos. You guys are missing out big time.

Yes, they are the most expensive hammer out there, but trust me, they are worth every penny from the first swing.

Lighter to carry all day. Faster to swing. Drives nails fast.

I used to have an Estwing and now would not even consider anything but a Stiletto.

On the other hand, if you are the type to buy DIY tools at Home Depot and don't want to spend the money on something as fundamental as a hammer, the Estwing is the best you'll get at the mass production level.

I just saw this and laughed. If you consider $28 bucks to be "expensive" for a hammer, I'd hate to see all the other hammers you've owned and don't like. You have to spend money to get quality products...ESPECIALLY tools.

I opt for the nail gun because I don't like pi$$ing around, point and pull, on to the next. I spend most the time making sure the cuts are there.

Over priced junk. If I have to move some nailes I use my 23 oz. Vaughn Cal Framer one swing to set one swing to drive.

Around these parts Form Setters use estwing. Never seen a piont in one for wood construction.

Re: A Great Hammer Needed!!

I have some older Estwings but my new weight forward ones are my first choice if it's going to be a busy day.

Save those cheapos, they make for good loaners.

I really hope this is sarcasm. If not I don't know what to say, except I feel a bit sorry for you.

A 20oz. Estwing cost under $25 and will work like new until you lose it.
