Fein Multimaster

What will this thing do well? Or maybe I should ask what won't it do?

The two things I'm thinking of right now are:

Cutting neat holes in clay roofing tiles without cracking them

and

Cutting aluminum rails (kinda like slightly smallish aluminun unistrut) neatly and not taking a terribly long time

Anyone use the cordless version?

Re: Fein Multimaster

I got one a couple of years ago. I've just used it for carpentry work though.

It doesn't get used often, but when you need it it's great to have.

I've used it numerous times on cutting out existing baseboard where a new built-in cabinet will be installed. Works great.

It also works great for cutting holes in existing hardwood floors (for adding a floor outlet, etc).

It's not cheap but man, I'm always glad I bought it when I have the use for it.

Re: Fein Multimaster

I have one and I use it for fine detail sanding and renovating old windows. It cuts out the old putty as neat as you like and then sand the hard to get bits very precisely. I also use the paint scraper attachment to scrape thick paint then turn it on it's side so that the scraper chips of thicker paint. The spare bits are dear as poison but if you look after the bits they last. Oh, i have also used it for installing laminate and parquette flooring where I need to cut out the floor plate slightly. Does great job.

I would probably avoid the cordless version as I find the corded version only just has enough power. When cutting harder materials it bogs down a bit so i would aim at the corded version. Also, when buying one get it in a kit with the quick release head. It's much more convenient because you find you usually switch between attachments quite regularly.

Re: Fein Multimaster

I bought a multi-master about 5 years ago - came in a kit with carbide disks for grout removal and a wood blade. I ended up demomolishing all the tile for the job I bought it for!!, and never actually used it for grout again, however, I use the large carbide disk for neatly cutting plaster walls (with little dust) and I use the wood blades constantly - undercutting casing and jambs when doing tile, cutting out hardwood, getting into that tight spot that nothing else will get into, etc. Only downside I have found is the cost of the blades - I think the last wood one cost me $80.00 - (which is fine until you hit a nail and rip off teeth)

I agree with one of the posts above, its an expensive tool, it doesn't get used all the time, but when you need and have it - you'll love it!!

Check out www.multiblades.com for non-Fein blades that are cheap and better.

I think Al just had a patent scare with Fein last week, but I believe if you email him, he is still doing business.

Re: Fein Multimaster

i bought one those for one of my first jobs in business on my own.I was refinishing a bunch of cabinet faces and had a lot of detail sanding to do.Since then it has come in handy alot.Mostly for undercutting door jambs and casings and cutting back base while it is in place.i was very sad when I got it stolen out of my rig with a bunch of my other gear last year.

Thanks for that site Greg, I have been searching for replacements not made by Fein. Even though Fein make great products, they tend to bend you over the barrel for replacement bits. Cheers,

Sam-

There is also a guy on Ebay who makes aftermarket blades. I'd post a link but I'm too new of a user here.

Re: Fein Multimaster

I love mine. When remodeling, I can scarf cut an existing crown, baseboard, of anything else. Then, when closing back up, I can lay the blade against the cut-off piece to make a perfect matching scarf joint to tie-in the molding again.
Just one of many uses.

Thanks for the link, samthedog.

Sam-

I'm new here and can't figure out how to PM you. Just do a 'multimaster blade' search on Ebay. The seller's user name is "erinrenee". His blades are about $20 each.

Also, for everyone's information, if you can find them, buy the genuine Fein blades in the 3 pak and you can save some money
