Re: Fat Max's

I go through 5-6 per year. Junk, but for some reason I keep buying them. Anyone try the stabilia?

Re: Fat Max's

I'll have to remember that home creepo receipt idea.

I second the "has anyone used the stabila tape?"

I have been using the fax max for a while and havent had much problem with it. They last me 3-6months. I use the stand out a lot.

When i do finish work i use my old stanley power lock that i have had for 8 years.

Re: Fat Max's

I am buying a Stabila, just because I want one.

I use the 25 Stanley for about everything, except, when I need the 35, and the FatMax sets in the trailer until I need it.

Kind of diverting, but it isn't a problem to shift tapes, so why not keep a few around? I have 200 foot steel tapes, one in inches, one in tenths, and they both have a purpose during layouts.

what are 10/ths for in layout? I honestly don't know.

lol I remember trying to square a foundation with a tape that did both, and couldn't figure out WTH was going on.

Engineer's measurement.
If you read your mortgage survey,
or any other kind, they are expressed
in feet, tenths, and hundredths.
Bench mark elevations are expressed
the same way.

For instance, when I need to square off the pins in a layout of a large slab, and I have no help, then I use the math to find the distance on the long side, a/sq+b/sq=c/sq. Last one if did was 60 feet wide, so the math came out to 84.85....the tenths on the tape avoid confusion.

Re: Fat Max's

Stanley power lock for me. I have had my 10 meter, 5 meter and 3 meter tapes for years and they work just fine. The only thing is that because I have used them for so long the coating is starting to come off on the underside. I avoid spraying with oil because all the crap then sticks to them and they stop retracting properly after a little while. A good blow out with the compressor while the tape is retracted and some graphite powder and they start working properly again.

Re: Fat Max's

I generally use a 25' fatmax extreme and have had good luck with them. In the shop I use 10' and 16' lufkins (they have more of the little lines)

Re: Fat Max's

I use their levels, saw horses Tapes, Storage boxes and hammers and have had very good luck with them. I dont expect a tape to last long when it get full of dust, water and gets dropped 10 times a day.

Re: Fat Max's

The standout is great. The first thing to go on mine was the lockout lever. One drop and the slide lever broke in half but still functional.

I picked up the fatmax saw out of necessity a couple weeks ago. Sharp tooth is a little too agressive. I hated to buy a saw because of the quantity of nice Disston's I had back at the house!

Re: Fat Max's

For what I measure, the older Stanley "Maxsteel" is a perfect compromise of standout, durability, & ability to roll measure inside corners. I really don't understand why they aren't more popular. Please, someone start buying these before thay are discontiunued for lack of sales! They are already hard to find.
