Enclosed Trailers & 1500 Trucks

I was wondering if anyone here is pulling or has pulled a 16' Enclosed trailer with a Dodge Ram 1500, and what it was like. I have a 2007 Dodge Ram Quad Cab Hemi 1500 and am thinking about purchasing a 16'x7' Cargo Craft dual axle trailer but am just a little worried about it being too much for the truck to handle. I'll be hauling cabinets and tools so I wont be adding too much weight. what do you think?

A newer half ton shouldn't have any problem with that. If you had a half ton from before the auto manufacturers started competing for higher half ton towing rating, then I would recommend upgrading if you were pulling something like that on a regular basis, but a 07 shouldn't have any problems.

Even my 96 F150 can pull a 12' dump bed trailer, but it doesn't really like it, and I wouldn't want to do it on a regular basis.

Make sure you check the weight rating of your hitch. If it is a class 3 you may need a weight distributing hitch to be legal.

My jobsite trailer is only 8', but I do tow a 25' Airstream travel trailer. To Yellowstone and back with my GMC 1500 no problem.
It's going to come down to how much weight you put in it. Load it up and take it to a scale - you may be surprised at how much it really weighs loaded. As mentioned earlier, you may need a weight distribution system.

I pull a 6x12 two axle trailer everyday for the last 5 years with a 98 dodge 1500 4x4. The trailer is fully loaded with tools and sheving. Its alittle bit heavy for that truck but it pulls great.I added ashift kit to help with the shifts, working out well.

I used to pull a 16' v-nose ... weighed about 6500lbs loaded with gear.... with the same truck (07 1500 quad with the hemi) it wasn't to bad but it struggled on starts and steep inclines..... the new 08 F350 deisel does a much better job.

Your truck can pull that trailer fine. It is going to suck gas and it may be hard on your tranny but you will have plenty of power to pull it.

I have an 07 1500 Ram and we pull 7x14 enclosed trailers all day with no problems. I have added an extra leaf to the back springs on all our trucks. I am not sure what we will do to the 09 with coil springs.
