Drill For Mixing??
I'm in the market for a power tool to mix up mortar and other thick stuff. I tried my Milwaukee 1/2" HD impact/drill but smoke rolled out of it immediately. Hope I didn't screw that completely up.
Anyway, want to start looking at yard sales and pawn shops for something that has the power. yet doesn't take 2 men and a boy to hold on to. What kind of power should I be looking for...amps, HP, or what? Thanks. Rob

Re: Drill For Mixing??
How about getting a spade handled mixing drill. That's what they are made to do.

Re: Drill For Mixing??
When we were installing vanities and countertops in D.C., thats what every illegal (about 75% of workers on the job)was using down there from drywall mud to mortars. They seemed pretty tough.

Re: Drill For Mixing??
I know this is an old post but I wanted to relate my new/old purchase today. I picked up a used Dewalt 1/2" corded drill (7.2A) for $55 bucks at a pawn shop - the original chuck key was even attached. I've got a bunch of Thinset and grout to mix this weekend and there's no way I was using any of my drills.
Now, aside from being a tool whore for new tools, I can't stop myself from shopping at pawn shops! When is someone going to start TBA (Tool Buyers Anonymous)? |

Re: Drill For Mixing??
Terry,
Glad you were able to get a good used tool. I've ducked in a few pawn shops also looking for something to mix with but nothing yet. I know what you mean about the tool addiction. I get mine from my Dad. If he had $5 in his pocket and it was a choice between lunch or a new screwdriver, he'd go hungry. I'm just glad my hobby and trade involve tools, 'cause I don't think I could afford stamps or coins.

I've tried pawn shops a while ago, but the tools were so beat up and it seemed they wanted close to what I could buy them for new!

Hi, my name is Robert and I am a tool addict. I have been clean now for 12 days from buying any new tool over $20.

Re: Drill For Mixing??
Robie,
I know, aren't we a sick lot! Mike, I tend to agree about pawn shops but I took a chance. This one was in a nearby industrial city so I figured there'd be a good chance I'd find what I needed. I plugged it in and listened to it for a bit before I bought it. They actually had a D-Handle Hilti but I didn't want to spend $265. Also, they have a 30 day warranty and considering the amount of thinset and grout I have to mix next week, I figure I'll put it through it's paces. Robert, Hi my name is Terry and it's been 9 hours since I bought my last tool , I feel so ashamed .

Re: Drill For Mixing??
From expsensive experience, dont use a hammer drill for mix'n. 3 Bosch 1/2" hammer drills tht looked like cheech and chong were hiding in my trash can when I pitched'em.
I got an old 1/2" milwaukee coreded drill years ago that I put back into service after eating up the Bosch's. Just a standard 1/2" drill with brute force-it gets warm, but still does the job. a few of my drywall subs use that exact dewalt for their mudslinging and I know they've had them for years with constant use so IMO they're proven...if this milwaukee burns up I'll buy one, but for now everything works good. Just dont think hammer drills are geared for brute force mixing. I've also used a $5 drill my grandfather picked up at a garage sale, some old craftsman 3/4" one speed one direction drill....that thing is a friggin tank!! Funny story-we were drilling out wheels for a stock car once (opening up existing holes so they'd go over the larger studs) my little 120lb buddy was taking his turn literally putting all his weight on that 3/4" craftsman, the drill bit, bit-and around he went until the plug came undone...laughed my azz off since it reminded me of the 3 stooges
