DEAD Dewalt Nano

Today my 18V Nano battery of less than 5 months with very little hours on it got the fast flash of death . I got home and called the Dewalt service number on the battery and talked to a rep. He is replacing my dead battery, all I'll have to do is pay shipping. Anyone else have any problems with the Nano batteries?

Re: DEAD Dewalt Nano

Tools of the Trade did. They used the Dewalt cordless nailer with Nicad and Nano. The Nicad lasted longer. I was disappointed with that type of result.

I've been using both Nano and XRP (with XRP tools) for the last few weeks.

It sure seems like the XRP has better run time. Pretty disappointing!

Don't pay shipping. Any local Dewalt service center will gladly give you a replacement for free. If they are out of stock I bet they will not charge you shipping.

Re: DEAD Dewalt Nano

that's funny. I was using mine last week and all the sudden nothing! I'm guessing it has a smartchip inside that tells it not to discharge completely, because it recharged properly.
after reading the dewalt blurb on the nano, it does have a shutdown feature but seems to be associated with motor failure:

The NANO batteries will also protect the tool from burn up. For example, if a large diameter bit is locked up in the material, the NANO battery will shut down prior to motor burn up. Inserting the battery into the charger will reset the battery.

Not to be an apologist for DeWalt (although I do love DeWalt), it's fair to remember that these are relatively new products on the market.

Chalk it up to production glitches. Gremlins.

The Nano Combo Kit (Impact w/Hammerdrill) is my next consideration. I will keep an eye on this particular thread.

I don't see how anyone can even consider the Nano. There are other brands that are proven, have better features, are lighter, and cost much less. The Nano just doesn't stack up.

Can't say that i have had any such problems with Hilti 36V or Bosch 36V Litheon.

Re: DEAD Dewalt Nano

Well, it happened to me today too. This morning I put a Nano 18v on the charger, it had been drained yesterday. NOTHING!!! It's like the charger doesn't even recognize it. Tested the charger with other batts and no problems. Tried it again this evening before I headed out and still nothing.

This was a DC927 hammer drill kit purchased on 04/02/08 from Lowes. I'm going to attempt to exchange it tomorrow.

Overall I'm not impressed with the 18v Nano at all!

Re: DEAD Dewalt Nano

An update, the other day my new Nano battery came from Dewalt. I've had no problems with the other battery but I've started to have problems with my DW744X table saw not staying square. I just found out there is a recall on them and hopefully I can make a few calls to see if mine is affected.

Re: DEAD Dewalt Nano

I just bought a nano battery and charger this morning at HD on the way to work. I plug the baterry and the light doesn't go on- dead battery.
Gona return it tomorrow. The rep for Dewalt at HD said that they discontinued the other baterries and will only make nanos now. I don't know if he was just trying to sell me the nano battery cause I came in for an xrp which they were out of.

Re: DEAD Dewalt Nano

The HD & Lowe's that I go to in Texas doesn't carry any of the Nano products yet. I bought mine from a tool distributor. These batteries are like a turbocharger to my old XRP tools. I just bought another battery & charger today off Ebay. I can't wait till the price comes down (whenever that will be?)

Re: DEAD Dewalt Nano

Got to the shop this morning put the "dead" battery in the charger and wouldn't you know it, light starts flashing and battery charges up. Charged up and used a little today. We shall see what happens.

If Dewalt stopped making the XRP batts they are in big trouble, I don't have any faith in the Nano. Did see 2 XRP batts at Home Depot and Lowes for $119.

Re: DEAD Dewalt Nano

I might just buy some more XRP batteries until the price comes down on Nanos. I think Western Tool and Supply sells two XRPs for $99, although I'm not sure.

Re: DEAD Dewalt Nano

the nano batteries seem to have an electronic shutoff-when they get low on charge they shut off, which I would guess keeps them from discharging too much thereby possibly lengthening the service life and max charge. Ever had a guy working for you who will run the cordless tool into the ground trying to get the last little bit of life out of the drained battery? Suppose the nano fixes the idiot factor.

some people swear by letting the battery fully discharge.... seriously not a smart thing to do
