Cordless Saw Useful?

Hey guys, I was just on ebay I accidently bid on 18v dewalt 6 1/2" saw and I freakin won it.(thats ok though cause I'm a tool whore) I never really thought of cordless saw doing to much. Am I wrong? What can I expect? What do you use yours for?

They can come in handy for thinner material. I wouldn't try to cut too much of anything over 1". I burnt my Hitachi one out once cutting off the ends of joists - it started smoking on about the 10th one.

I find it good for skirting and fence boards.

Re: Cordless Saw Useful?

I started the cordless era with a Bosch 18 volt ni-cad set, and it was great. Circ, jig, sawzall and 1/2" drill. Used the heck out of that and then I scored a sweet Ridgid 24 volt li-ion set at HD last year, at their year-end clearance sale. I have used the tools in this set way more than I ever thought I would. From the 1/2" hammer drill to the sawzall to the 6 1/2" circ to the flashlight, they have all seen lots of use. The li-ion batteries last longer than you'd expect, and the tools are all quite torquey for being cordless. I use my circ for ladder work and at the lumber yard to chop long lengths to fit in my van. It rips through 2 bys like a corded saw. I'd be LOST without these tools now.

You need a new blade-these saws can handle 2 bys with ease, when they have a sharp blade.

Well the blade was virtually brand new but as I remember it, the wood was pretty wet (PT) which probably didn't help.

Re: Cordless Saw Useful?

They are great for the little jobs like wacking off a couple of two by fours, or cutting small pieces of plywood or something like that. As others have said, a sharp blade makes all the difference. Mine came as part of a kit and I really didn't think I'd use it much, but have actually found quite a few uses for it.

It has enough power to trim doors, cut 2X stock, and as Chris said, they work great for cutting foam.

I even use it to cut drywall with, especially doing demo work. When cutting in an opening for a new window or door, you can set the depth of the blade for the thickness of the drywall and not have to worry about cutting wires or piping like you do with a sawzall. I just hold a vacuum hose up to the saw and there is very little dust to worry about, plus it makes a nice clean straight line.

Re: Cordless Saw Useful?

Great for a couple of cuts as already stated. If you are cutting a lot of material you will use a lot of batteries. Easier to run a cord IMO.

Re: Cordless Saw Useful?

Dewalt makes a couple of them. One is good, the other, I dunno.

I tried cutting a wet pt stringer with mine once. I think I got three steps cut before the battery died. Other than that its a great tool to have.

Re: Cordless Saw Useful?

Thanks for the replys guys. Yup I guess it will come in handy, plus you can never have too many tools Hopefully its a decent saw. I used someones 5 3/8" dewalt cordless once a while ago and I wasn't real impressed. This one is the 6 1/2" 18v xrp saw so hopefully its better too bad it isn't the nano but oh well.

They are nice to have if you have to make a couple quick cuts opposed to having to drag a cord and finding a plug. Also if you are without electric sometimes.

Re: Cordless Saw Useful?

I love my cordless. I use them a lot. I did an entire deck with my cordless stuff before. There was no rails it was just a 12x12 with 1 box step. It was slow last January and I was too lazy to cary a cord.

I use my cordless all the time. Definitely great for when you don't need/want to carry all the bulky stuff. I wouldn't build a house with it but it's good if you need to burn through a few pieces. You are going to love it.

Re: Cordless Saw Useful?

I never used mine untill I started cutting backer board for tile jobs with it. you'll find a use for and will probably forget about it till you do those jobs again. As long as you got it cheap, you'll find a use!

It looks like you could do a whole job without recharging too after seein all those batteries you have

Can't wait till it gets here. Ain't it always great getting a new tool, sometimes I think the only reason I'm in this bussiness is for the tools lol.
