Cordless Makita

Anybody have probs with cordless Makita LXT stuff? I have one of the compact LXT(white & black) drills and both batteries were shot in 8 mos...I notice that the green and black tools appear to have a different battery--Im wondering what the difference is.

Re: Cordless Makita

I looked at them a few months ago. If my memory is correct the green batteries are lighter and have a reduced run time. The tool impressed me with it's lite weight and the way it fits in my hand. I am still waiting for some feedback from others before buying a set.

Black/white - 1.5 Amp/hr
Teal/Black - 3.0 Amp/hr

black/white - consumer
teal/black - professional

I've got the 3.0 impact/hammer drill combo and love 'em. Use them all day, every day...

Re: Cordless Makita

I picked up 2 of the smaller 18v LXT drivers a little less then a year ago, and haven't had any serious problems with them so far. I've abused one of them pretty badly, and so far its going strong. The worst I've done to it was dropping it 10' off a roof onto concrete driveway in -20 weather. It survived that with a minor crack to the casing, but still works great. Since then I've used it on more then one occasion to mix 5 gallons of drywall mud. This one stays in my truck at all times and I'm constantly pulling it out and using it cold (-10 to -30 weather). So far the batteries seem to be going strong, the only differances between me and some other guys is that I don't use it everyday, so I can't say how their batteries will stand up to constant use.

I also recently bought a 6 peice combo kit with the green and black (or blue and black, they look more blue to me) drivers. I have hardly used the cordless hammer drill/driver that came with the kit so far because it is so much heavier then the white ones (even though, still much lighter then the DeWalt 18v XRP)

The main differance in the batteries is the Amp Hours rating. the ones that came with my white drivers had a lower Ah rating, they are a 1.5Ah and the ones that came in my combo kit are 3Ah. The 1.5 Ah batteries are also half the size and weight of the 3Ah.

The thing I love about them is that they are relatively interchangeable. I can use both charges to charge either the 1.5Ah or 3Ah batteries, and the 3Ah batteries work in my smaller white and black drivers. Unfortunatley the 1.5AH batteries don't fit into the green and black tools that came with the 3Ah batteries.

One other differance is the 1.5Ah batteries charge in 15 minutes and 3Ah batteries charge in 40minutes.

I have the green/black set. Bought it in May & I like it a lot. The drill stopped working, but got a new gearcase put in under warranty in 48 hours. I like the impact driver, drill, & circ saw, but the recip saw is absolutely worthless.

Re: Cordless Makita

It is the best 18V on the market. I have tried them all and the weight and power is great.

The Black/white tools have 1.5Ah battery which is plenty for a lot of peoples use. They charge in 15mins, so you can trade them out all day and always have a fresh one to go.

I understood the black/white version to be the compact size. The battery is only half as tall as the 3.0. That's why the amp hours are half. It also charges in 15 minutes. I don't think the quality is any less.

Bought the 18v drywall gun 3 months ago. Screws jam all the time. Bought another one to use while original one being repaired under warranty and it didn't even last a day. Got a screw jammed in it and couldn't get it out so took it back. ****ing crap. Should have bought Hilti.

Re: Cordless Makita

I have the 5 pc kit, and a buddy of mine has the 5 piece kit and the compact drill, he is a windows and siding contractor, and uses his hard everyday. The compact has all the balls you need, and makes being 2 or 3 stories on a ladder with a window in one hand extremely easy. Ive had quite a few problems with my kit over the past 2 years, but it has all been covered under the warranty. I have a new batterery, 2 new chucks and a new transmission on the drill, a new flashlight, charger, and a new blade guard on the circ saw. Seems like alot, but i get it back in about a week looking brand new and working great again.

Re: Cordless Makita

I have owned Makita tools for the past 7 years now, and I usually have to replace my batteries every 2 years or so. I use them everyday all day. I do not have the new LXT tools yet, so I cant judge them yet, but they should last more then 8 months. Unless you did something to ruin the batteries. I would not buy consumer tools for everyday contractor work though.

Goodluck.
