I also carry a folding utility knife in my pocket, and I've been considering replacing it with the Gerber EAB

Re: Best Utility Knife
Have any of you guys tried out either of these?
Stanley 10-777 Sheffield 12331 Apparently there is a Sheffield with blade storage, although I havn't seen it around here yet.

What do you guys think about a nonretractable? I dont think I ever cut myself with one and I probably sliced myself open more times then I can count with a retracable.

Re: Best Utility KnifeQuote:
I found one of those cheap $0.95 utility knifes and been using the hell out of it. I put a titanium blade it in and it lasted almost 2 months so I dont see the point of the quick change blade.

Re: Best Utility Knife
Out of the seemingly hundreds of utility knives I have owned and lost over the years, I have concluded that it is hard to beat a fixed blade knife. I really want a good retractible blade but it always seemed to me that after cutting a few sheets of drywall, they wouldn't retract so easy or I would pull the whole retractor out the end and break it. So I ended up not even using the retractor. I have the stanley that has the thumb screw attachment on it so I don't have to go to the truck for a screwdriver to change a blade. As far as the danger of cutting yourself with the fixed blade, stick your knife in the small pocket in you toolbelt, works perfect once you get it streched out.

Re: Best Utility Knife
Guys, this is the old retractable model I was talking about in my original post:
![]() http://www.amazon.com/Change-Utility...047657&sr=8-18 It has all of the features I’m looking for in a retractable utility knife. I was hoping there would be a model in production with the same quality. Unfortunately, this may not be the case. Unless you have experience with THIS retractable utility knife, you simply don’t know how good a retractable can be.

Re: Best Utility KnifeQuote:
I never go anywhere without it in my carpenter pant pocket. quick change & retractable. hard to find them so i always keep an eye out for them. i must have 5 or 6 now, every tool belt, bucket, tool box, etc. irwin blades work well for me. my sign printer guys use the breakaway blades, i hate those. Re: Best Utility Knife
Best compromise I've found between blade storage, a blade that stays put, and a blade that can be changed quickly.

Re: Best Utility Knife
Stanley 199 with fixed hook blade made in Sheffield Germany. It's all I've used for the past 10 years. Tried the banana knives and quick change knives but for the cost their not worth it.

Re: Best Utility KnifeQuote:
![]() http://www.stanleytools.com/default....ractable+Knife These two knives are the ones I was describing in my first post in this thread. Stanley also makes a couple knives in the fatmax category that have a knob on the side of the knife that supposably lets you tighten down on the blade and lock it in place. I haven't used one, so I couldn't say how well it works. ![]() http://www.stanleytools.com/default....+Utility+Knife ![]() http://www.stanleytools.com/default....TNUMBER=10-777 |

Re: Best Utility KnifeI have one of these, ace hardware had them for $1.00 so I grabbed it. I never used it but I had to take it apart to get the quick change to work, the new blade wouldnt slide in because the plate it fits into wasnt made correctly.

Re: Best Utility Knife
I've got 3 of the irwin quick change. I love the knife but any time you start to lean on it and really cut something the blade pops right out. I just picked up the lenox knife with the quick change. It seems the blade retainer pins go through the blade a little further so it looks like it has potential. I haven't really put it to the test yet so I can't say for sure.
I probably have at least 15 knives in the van. I can never find one I'm happy with so I'm always trying out new ones. |

Re: Best Utility Knife
Lowes does sell a version of this knife with a 5 blade storage (I own 2 of them). Very rugged & the blade never pops out (unless you accidentally hit the release button with your thumb. Easy to do till you get used to it).
