Re: Best Tape Measure
The new irwin tapes are good. I picked up an 8m (forget what that is in feet). It's a lot smaller than the 5m Fatmax, has comparable stand out (or near enough) the tape itself is less curled and easier to read.
They make three different models of tape, the basic, the pro and the xp. I have the basic and it's fantastic. |

Re: Best Tape Measure
I just bought 2 komelon 25' stainless steel tapes.
http://www.amazon.com/Komelon-SS125S.../dp/B000276E8S I like them.. the hooks nice and the tape is legible.. you can dip these things in water and not have a problem like with a normal tape.. no rusting! I normally use a 16' or 25' fat max and a hilti pd4 laser |

Re: Best Tape Measure
Best tape is a good old Stanley Powerlock. Actually just broke mine a few months back and replaced it immediately with an exact duplicate. While replacing it though I did notice that quality control on the paint has gotten a little sloppy(shocking). I stood there like an obsessive compulsive jerk for about 10 minutes finding one that had good thin crisp lines on it. Some of them were smeared so badly I couldn't believe they were allowed to be sold.
Anyways, best practical joke is replacing your boss's tape with this:

Re: Best Tape Measure
I actually picked up a Master Force 16' the other day and am quite impressed. Time will tell. I know that they have been Menards brand, but since Stabila starting making their levels and from my understanding from a rep that Bosch is making their cordless tools, I decided to try it out.
http://shop.menards.com/main/tools-h.../p-1710202.htm Prior to that I purchase a 25' and 16' Husky combo. They suck. The friggin' 16' tape has metric on one side which is ridiculous. The tape broke at the 6" mark after about two months and they almost did not replace it. They are only warrantying the spring and mechanism. Not much of a lifetime satisfaction warranty...I have now learned that I need to open it up and break the mechanism or spring. My all time favorite tape was Stanley lever lock (green) 25'. It was thin, had a decent stand out and lasted forever. Never had an issue with the lever locking mechanism, although I have heard that some had issues with them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/TAPE-RULE-3-...-/260956347025 |

Re: Best Tape Measure
I have a Kobalt 25' from Lowes... it's my third one since I bought the original... and the original is the only one I paid for.
May not be the "best " tape as far as standout and all...but has a better warranty than the Stanleys... |

Re: Best Tape Measure
i have so many tape measures its ridiculous. they had a deal at HD afew months ago get a 25' fatmax and a 16' fatmax for the price of a 25' heck and there still in the package. but needless to say some tapes are better than others but they are service their purpose and perform their job.. well most of the time anyway..

Re: Best Tape Measure
i rock the crafstman tapes ace hardware puts them on sale for 5 bucks all the time. i think they are pretty nice and for 5 bucks they take them back no matter what i have 4 back ups and one that gets replaced every 2-3 monthes free of charge. so ill stick with them. whats funny is Sears wont take them back anymore they give you a stanley but ace still sells and warranties them. i dont know if sears just has to many people like myself to walk after snapping the end off on purpose or what.

Re: Best Tape MeasureQuote:
Just gotta dry them out over night if they get wet. Mine usually last 2-3 months. Only a month less than the regular fat max's.

Re: Best Tape MeasureQuote:
Leave the tape measure setting upright for a few days. Extend the tape fully, wrap a cotton clothe around both sides and allow to retract slowly. You will wipe away any residual oil and your tape is good to go! |
