First off I am not the one making them, so it really doesn't matter to me. Second, how many tools are out there that do the EXACT same thing, look almost identical, but have a different name on them? Hmmm..... All it takes to not be in default of a patent is just ONE little thing that is different, could be just in the material used to make it, think about it for a while. How many things can you think of that are the same thing, but just a touch different in some little way, but their company keeps on making them with no legal issues to deal with......

Sorry Steve... I've been away from the computer a lot because of my Move to Virginia. I'm editing things now.

It does take a pretty smart carpenter to do so I guess. 90% of the trimmers in New York build stairs, so I guess I just thought that most trimmers STILL did stair work and would love what they saw on here.

fck off boy I don't need your tool to finish stairs

You know if you didn't steal the idea and try to sell it for 900 dollars. It would be alright. Pay for advertising too.

But other than that I'd buy a Mill from Harbour Freight and make my own before I paid you 900 dollars.

Re: Anybody Use The StairTool?

I have been using a stair tool for about 5 years now and it's a great tool.

I'll have to remember not to move to Florida...

Re: Anybody Use The StairTool?

Mike I have a Wheaton Tools Stair Wizard....which is basically the same thing as the StairTool. They are both basically transfer templates. I have found that mine is irreplaceable. I would not even think of doing a set of steps without it...now. I would say even if you only have one set of steps to do it is worth the price imo.

Since this thread was brought up I thought I would tell everyone that the maker of the stairtool has died and it is no longer available.

Re: Anybody Use The StairTool?

Wow, on that Dave I had no idea it was a small operation. Some bigger tool company should buy that from them.

Here is to Bill Jankowski

Speaking of the stair tool, just so happens I used mine a few days ago at my house, redid a pantry with 6 shelves, walls were all F'd up, used the stair tool and the shelves fit like a glove.

My brother is a professional stair guy and he has been looking high and low for the stairtool Somebody stole his from a jobsite and he has been on me for months to find him one. I don't mean to spam the site or violate any rules, but if anybody has one they'd be willing to sell, please contact me Thanks!

Re: Anybody Use The StairTool?

Lats time I had to fit treads, I built a jig just like this. 15 minutes and a couple carriage bolts wing nuts and washers. No need to spend $100. I never knew someone makes these.

Re: Anybody Use The StairTool?

In fact, today I was fitting shelves inside a closet. This same jig would have been perfect for it. I'll have to build another one, perhaps with extensions on the 'feet' to also capture the width. Sort of a deluxe "pinch stick" that can get the inside measurements of any inside box.

I just used mine today on a set of oak treads and risers, worked like a champ as always.

Huh?

I don't get that. I have used mine for going on three years now and have not had that happen once. But mine are rubber, maybe that has something to do with it. It also gets put back in the tube and secured in an out of the way place in the truck, and I treat it like a measuring tool not some piece of random lumber. Maybe he got a defective one or something...he could always hot glue them in I bet.

Holy crap, $170... That's it, I'm starting "Karma Tools" and going into business for all the lazy carps who won't build their own stair tread gauges. That is a nice looking one, though.

thanks I'll check with him on that. He's the top stair guy in 4 states and works over 60 hours a week, so I know he uses the heck out of it. he was pretty bummed when his stair gauge got ripped off, he said he's tried everything and wants that stairtool

I'm not lazy, just efficient....my time bills out at a hair over $100 an hour. I'm pretty sure it would take me more than an hour and forty five minutes to make my own.

Re: Anybody Use The StairTool?

Beaver Woodworking Supplies In Brockton, MA has the original StairTool like the one made by Bill J. I just got one recently, I tried to include a picture but couldn't. they have a website and just click shop online and then got to specialty tools.
