Air Compressor Blowing Up?

I was given an old air compressor. I need one at the shop so I fiddled with it and got it going. Took about 2 minutes. It had not been drained regularly. When I opened the drain the water that ran out was a bit rusty.

How much risk am I at? Do these things really "go Kablooey"? (Loaded Goat)

Or are those dire warning labels simply a CYA thing?

I know no one can tell me whether this compressor is safe or not. But in general, what's the scoop?

99.99% of the time they will just pinhole and start losing air. Sometimes larger blowouts can occur but nothing dangerous, just makes a lot of noise. Catastrophic events can occur if the safety blowoff is not working or has been removed.

Ahhhh...

CRAP!!!

I kept looking at this compressor saying to myself "Something is missing here. Something is missing."

Now I know. And I am shaking my head and saying "Thank God I posted this and thank God Teetorbilt posted his reply. How did I miss that."

Gonna put a relief valve on before I use it.

Thanks man! Big time.
