I don't own a Makita Compound mitre though I've seen/heard really good things about them. I own Bosch saws, 2 singe bevel 10" and a duel bevel 12" and I like 'em... The only thing negative I've heard about the makitas is the small fence... I guess they sell an attachment but I'd rather not have to pony up for one. Other than that rock solid as for what I've seen.

I have a dewalt sliding compound and the worst thing I can say about it is I get a back ache having to carry it arround the jobsite. I noticed dewalt has a smaller size slider on the market for around $350-I would consider a smaller saw if it was lighter and I could keep the depth of cut.

The older makita's were way better than the new ones. My 12" Side Bosch w/Matsuh!ta blade is money, it spues dust every where. I am saving my money for the KAPEX!!!!!

I have what is probably the first Makita dual bevel 12" slider (got to be close to 10 years old). Nice machine. The only issue I've had with it is the dedents under the table get clogged easily...it got to the point where I eventually removed them. Definitely not a saw I'd be happy about lugging from jobsite to jobsite (have a smaller one for that) as it's a bit heavy and cumbersome.

For the money the Makita LS1430FL is hard to beat. It won best sliding compound saw in Fine Homebuilding Magazine. I don't have one but I tried one at a trade show. Very smooth and cuts like butter if you keep a good blade on it.
